CNC Machinist

Salary Range: £42,135 – £45,198 (includes 16.6% shift allowance)

Holiday: 33 days (25 days 8 statutory holidays)

Pension: Up to 9% employer match (contributory scheme)

Life Assurance: 5x basic salary

Hours & Shift Patterns

Weekly Hours: 37.5

Rotating Shifts:

Pattern 1: 05:45–13:30 (Mon–Thu) 05:45–12:15 (Fri)

Pattern 2: 13:15–21:00 (Mon–Thu) 11:45–18:15 (Fri)

Overtime: Paid at 1.5x on weekdays/Saturdays, 2x on Sundays

Orion are currently working with an innovative manufacturing company based in the heart of Birmingham who are looking for a highly experienced CNC Machinist to join the team. If you have strong experience in manufacturing, aerospace and precision engineering, CNC machining and metal fabrication then please get in touch.

CNC Machinist Duties & Experience:

  • Turning Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years (apprenticeship or hands-on experience)
  • Candidates with 8 years’ experience don’t need to be apprentice trained
  • Must have experience in horizontal turning (not vertical boring)
  • Experience with Tolerances around 50 microns
  • Experience with small bespoke batch sizes
  • Competent in tooling changes
  • Mill Turn Experience: Not required, but beneficial
  • Machines:
    • 3-axis CNC lathes (Fanuc-controlled)
    • Duson models: 2600, 3150, 5100
    • Some Mazak machines (mill-turn)
  • Software: FANUC (G-code/M-code understanding required)
  • Programming:
    • Not required to program from scratch
    • Must be confident editing speeds/feeds
    • Experience with NPI (New Product Introduction) advantageous
  • Other Requirements:
    • Must be comfortable working on 2–3 setups per day
    • Basic inspection skills (micrometers, verniers) required
    • Must be open to working across multiple similar machines
    • Familiarity with setting sheets and tooling documentation in transition
