The Staff Engineer is responsible for the overall technical coordination, supervision and follow-up of the Engine Department. The role ensures the safe, efficient and reliable operation of all machinery, technical spaces and assigned systems, while supporting the Chief Engineer in the planning, execution and control of maintenance, technical projects, safety management and operational readiness of the vessel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Department Leadership & Personnel Management: Support the Chief Engineer in the overall management of the Engine Department and in the implementation of technical, operational and maintenance priorities. Supervise and monitor the work of all engine officers and ratings, ensuring that tasks are properly assigned, executed and followed up. Ensure compliance with work and rest hour requirements for self and assigned personnel. Maintain professional conduct and appearance when required in passenger areas.
  • Technical Operations & Emergency Response: Monitor the general condition and operational readiness of all machinery spaces and technical areas, ensuring that the vessel remains safe, compliant and ready to sail at all times. Coordinate and supervise engine-related operational activities, including MDO bunkering, sludge and wastewater discharge, and receipt of spare parts and technical stores, ensuring proper procedures are followed and delegating tasks as appropriate. Remain available to respond to operational needs, technical issues and emergencies outside normal working hours as required.
  • Maintenance, Projects & Dry-Docking: Plan, coordinate and follow up planned and corrective maintenance activities for the Engine Department through Shipsure, ensuring timely execution, proper closure and accurate records. Manage technical defects and outstanding work items, assess their impact on operations, and ensure proper follow‑up with the Chief Engineer and relevant shipboard personnel. Prepare, coordinate and follow up technical stoppages, dry‑dock preparations, major maintenance periods, surveys and other planned technical activities.
  • Safety, Security & Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including VMS, MARPOL, SOLAS, STCW, class, flag and port state requirements, as well as environmental and quality standards. Ensure that all Engine Department personnel are familiar with the vessel’s machinery, safety procedures, emergency arrangements, permits to work, isolations and other relevant operational requirements. Ensure proper housekeeping, cleanliness and safe condition of engine rooms, workshops and technical spaces.
  • Administration & Logistics: Oversee spare parts, consumables and critical stock levels, ensuring adequate inventory control, timely requisitions and availability of essential equipment and materials. Coordinate technical matters with other departments, shore management, suppliers, contractors, class and authorities as required. Prepare a comprehensive handover at the end of the contract, including technical status, outstanding defects, ongoing maintenance, critical spares and operational concerns. Perform any additional duties as may reasonably be required by the Master or the Chief Engineer.

Health, Safety and Environment Duties and Responsibilities: All employees have a duty under Company Policies and VMS requirements to participate in shipboard emergency duties and drills in accordance with the vessel’s muster list and emergency procedures. Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and for that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Cooperate with management on health and safety matters. Use correctly all work items provided by the Company, including personal protective equipment, in accordance with training and instructions. Not interfere with or misuse anything provided for health, safety, or welfare. Abide by environmental protection rules and regulations and actively participate in the reduction, reuse, and recycling schemes in place. All employees shall participate actively in all HSEQ activities and promote safe practices as part of an integrated management approach.
