As a VFX Technical Artist, you will be responsible for creating, optimizing, and integrating VFX and technical assets into Minecraft while maintaining high visual quality and performance standards. You will work closely with artists, designers, and developers to create real-time visual effects that enhance gameplay and storytelling. Your responsibilities will include designing particle and materials, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring VFX assets are optimized across various platforms. You will collaborate with multiple departments to ensure VFX assets align with the overall game vision and assist in improving tools and workflows to streamline production.
Responsibilities:
- VFX and Technical Asset Creation: Design and create visually stunning real-time particles and entity effects to integrate into Minecraft.
- Strong art skills for creating stylised and tasteful VFX.
- Strong technical and math abilities for gameplay driven effects, or animation assistance.
- Intrinsic understanding of using queries to drive VFX.
- Collaborate with artists, designers, developers, and audio teams to ensure VFX assets align with and support the overall game vision.
- Work with audio designers to synchronize VFX with sound effects and gameplay events, ensuring a seamless player experience.
- Partner with level designers to ensure VFX integrate smoothly with game environments and dynamic elements.
- Assist in the development and improvement of VFX tools, workflows, and pipelines to increase production efficiency.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in VFX.
Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving:
- Identify, diagnose, and resolve technical issues related to VFX, ensuring smooth integration.
- Work closely with developers and QA to troubleshoot performance issues and implement optimizations for VFX.
Required Skills / Software:
- Strong experience in creating particle systems and materials in real-time game engines (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration across multiple teams, including art, design, development, and audio.
- Fluency in English.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex VFX-related technical issues effectively.
- Experience with game engines.
- Proficiency in VFX tools (e.g., Niagara, Cascade, or similar).
- A strong portfolio demonstrating a variety of VFX work, including examples from shipped games or similar projects.
- Demonstrate an understanding of an art style with styled VFX.
Nice to Haves:
- Familiarity with Minecraft’s Particle & material systems.
- Proficiency in Blockbench & Snowstorm.
