Position Summary
This part‑time position (up to 24 hours per week) supports Hatfield Marine Science Center housing and student life activities. Responsibilities include hosting events, serving as a point of contact for residents, driving motor pool vans for curricular/extra‑curricular activities, attending community events, and fostering safe, inclusive student experiences.
Key Responsibilities
Community Development (60%)
- Execute community programming, host events, maintain bulletin boards, and decorate doors.
- Work with supervisors to develop community action plans.
- Co‑facilitate community orientations and meetings each term.
- Promote and attend HMSC campus programming (e.g., weekly research seminars, Markham symposium, Marine Science Day).
- Support HMSC student programming, events, and activities.
- Assist with HMSC food pantry operations.
- Serve as first point of contact for residents’ issues outside office hours (8 AM–5 PM).
Build strong positive relationships:
- Facilitate connections among residents.
- Model academic success and engagement.
- Promote academic initiatives and refer residents to resources.
- Practice social justice values and create safe spaces.
- Respond to resident needs with referrals to campus resources.
- Support health and wellness strategies.
Support housing, curricular, and extracurricular activities:
- Assist with after‑hours and weekend resident arrivals and departures.
- Prepare apartments for incoming residents.
- Complete Duty Logs and Room Condition Reports.
- Submit maintenance requests and assist with laundry room operation.
- Be accessible during evenings and weekend housing hours.
- Participate in term transitions (arrivals/departures, room checks, campus tours).
- Drive residents and students in university‑owned vans for orientation, field trips, and course‑related activities.
Student Behavior and Crisis Management (10%)
- Report policy violations and disruptive behavior to supervisor.
- Model student conduct and housing policy.
- Communicate expectations and policy information to residents.
- Report incidents and resident concerns to supervisor.
- Understand and implement emergency response protocols.
- Educate residents on safe practices in emergencies.
- Communicate with on‑call staff during crisis response.
- Refer residents to appropriate support services.
- Serve on duty rotation.
Administration and Communications (30%)
- Attend and participate in meetings with supervisors, safety forums, and other assigned meetings.
- Monitor Discord channel and disseminate information.
- Check email at least twice a day.
- Participate in all trainings and orientations.
- Provide feedback in timely manner.
- Support facility tours and compile tour content.
- Support digital communications (newsletters, flyers, etc.).
- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university.
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; suspended students are not eligible.
- Must meet minimal enrollment standard:
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home‑schooling program
- Undergraduate and post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term
Additional Required Qualifications
- Be a current OSU student or degree partnership student with GPA 2.50 or higher.
- Maintain good academic and conduct standing.
- Demonstrate ability to cultivate relationships with diverse groups.
- Demonstrate understanding or open‑mindedness to social justice.
- Demonstrate willingness to engage in difficult conversations or conflict.
- Demonstrate ability to prioritize competing responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Commitment to diversity and social justice education, initiatives, and programs.
- Crisis management skills.
- Experience using Discord, Outlook, Canva, and other institutional technology.
- Experience supporting activities on the Hatfield campus.
- Ability to remain in the position for the duration of the Spring Term.
- Previous experience living in an educational residential community.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Work conditions: May work 8–15 hours per week in spring; required to live on‑site in HMSC provided housing. Must be available for non‑traditional hours including weekends, evenings, holidays, and after hours.
Work schedule: March 27 2026 through June 12 2026, preferred through September 24 2026. Required to work on spring move‑in dates (e.g., March 30). Required to work on spring move‑out dates.
Other conditions: Occasionally lifting up to 20 lb; communicating with OSU community and public; driving a university‑owned 12‑ to 15‑passenger van.
COMPENSATION $16.00/Hour. Furnished residence hall‑style room, shared with other student workers.
