Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Resident Assistant for the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

The employee will assume the duties and responsibilities of a Resident Assistant and will help to support Hatfield Student Life activities, including but not limited to: preparing housing units, coordinating housing move-ins/outs, supporting daily housing operations, planning events and outreach materials, acting as a point of contact for housing residents, and driving motor pool vans for curricular and extra-curricular activities. Other duties include attending and supporting Hatfield community events, such as seminars, and actions to foster safe, inclusive student experiences.

Position Duties

Community Development (60%)

  • Support housing, curricular and extracurricular activities: assist with after-hours and weekend resident arrivals and departures, and housing-supported events.
  • Prepare apartments for incoming residents, including moving and carrying linen packets, dishes and cookware, moving furniture, and minor cleaning tasks.
  • Complete Duty Logs and Room Condition Reports accurately and timely; submit maintenance requests.
  • Assist with laundry room operation and schedule.
  • Be accessible in campus housing during evening and weekend hours to ensure availability to residents.
  • Participate in term transitions, including arrivals/departures, room checks, and campus tours.
  • Drive residents and students in university-owned 12- or 15-passenger vans for orientation, field trips and course-related activities.

Execute and support community programming as directed by your supervisor, including but not limited to:

  • Individual conversations with residents, hosting and executing community-building events and activities, creating bulletin boards and door decorations. Work with your supervisor to determine community needs and create an action plan using community-building tools.
  • Co-facilitate community orientations and meetings each term.
  • Promote and participate in HMSC programming, including weekly research seminars, Markham symposium, and Marine Science Day; support student programming and events, including afterhours and weekend events.
  • Assist with HMSC food pantry operations.

Create and maintain strong positive relationships with the community:

  • Identify and facilitate connections among residents; role model academic engagement.
  • Promote academic initiatives and refer residents to academic resources.
  • Promote and practice social justice values and create a safe space across differences.
  • Identify and respond to resident needs through consultation and referral to campus resources.
  • Support health and wellness strategies for themselves and residents.

Student Behavior and Crisis Management (10%)

  • Confront and report potential policy violations to your supervisor.
  • Model behavior outlined in the Student Conduct Code and HMSC Housing Policy Guide.
  • Communicate expectations of appropriate behavior and University policy information to residents.
  • Communicate incidents and concerns to supervisor; implement emergency response protocols.
  • Educate residents on safe practices and appropriate actions in emergencies; communicate with on-call staff during crisis.
  • Refer residents to appropriate support services and serve on duty rotation.

Administration and Communications (30%)

  • Attend regular meetings with your supervisor and other required meetings.
  • Monitor Discord and disseminate information when appropriate.
  • Check email at least twice daily and respond as requested.
  • Participate in trainings and orientations; provide timely feedback.
  • Support facility tours and create content for tours; assist with digital communications and course-related information.
  • Develop communications such as newsletters and flyers to promote events.
  • Must be academically enrolled and meet minimum enrollment and academic standing requirements as specified.

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered β€œfull-time” per USCIS. A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS) and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Be a current OSU student or degree-partner student with OSU with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.
  • Maintain good academic and conduct standing with OSU.
  • Demonstrate the ability to cultivate relationships with diverse groups; openness to social justice.
  • Demonstrate willingness to engage in difficult conversations or conflict.
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritize competing responsibilities.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Commitment to diversity and social justice education and programs.
  • Experience using Discord, Outlook, Canva, and other institutional technology.
  • Experience supporting activities on or familiarity with the Hatfield campus.
  • Ability to remain in the position for the duration of Fall Term or longer.
  • Previous experience living in an educational residential community.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • May work 8-15 hours per week in summer.
  • Required to live on-site in HMSC-provided housing.
  • Must be available to work non-traditional hours, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and after hours.

Preferred start date: 9/22/2025.

Other conditions

  • Occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Interacting with OSU community members and the public, some of whom may be hostile.
  • Driving a university-owned 12- to 15-passenger van.
