This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time General Maintenance Mechanic position for the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University (OSU). This position will be located in Newport, Oregon. The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) is Oregon State University’s campus for research, education, and outreach in marine and coastal sciences. HMSC is located fifty-five miles west of the OSU main campus in Newport, OR. Through its partnerships, HMSC improves scientific understanding of marine systems, coastal processes, and resources, and applies this knowledge to social, economic, and environmental issues.

The HMSC Facilities team supports the expanding campus endeavors and strives to maintain the highest service standards with a focus on quality, efficiency, safety, and customer service. The General Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled, journey-level work in the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of machinery, equipment, and physical plant operating systems. This position provides maintenance support services to over twenty-five facilities located on over fifty acres of the expanding HMSC campus footprint.

Key duties include operation and maintenance of the seawater system and associated equipment, along with general maintenance tasks under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and Trades Maintenance Coordinator. This role delivers consistent, courteous, and reliable facilities maintenance services to all stakeholders and proactively assesses needs for equipment renewal, repairs, and preventative or scheduled maintenance. These efforts help ensure safe, secure, and hygienic facilities for students, staff, and faculty across OSU and associated state and federal facilities. This is an on-call position and considered essential personnel, which may require attendance during emergency university closures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Maintenance and Repair: Inspect, adjust, maintain and repair seawater related equipment such as pumps, pump motors, filters, air compressors, piping, chemical feed systems and seawater disinfection equipment. Service generators and vehicles by checking and changing oil, grease, and coolants, replacing minor components such as batteries, headlights and mufflers. May perform minor tune-ups. May perform maintenance and repair of larger equipment such as refrigeration and HVAC systems. Fabricate tools, machinery and parts or utilize discarded parts in repairs. Use of tools and equipment of various trades such as pipe cutters, saws, drills, planes, sanders, shears, and welding tools. Supports the preventative maintenance program through scheduled inspection and servicing of equipment and facilities, while maintaining records of repairs and maintenance performed.
  • General Maintenance: General maintenance and construction work such as building fences, repairing buildings and similar structures, installing shelves, roof and gutter maintenance. Use of power tools, such as drill presses and various saws. Painting activities include cleaning surfaces to be painted by use of scrapers and dusters, mixing and applying paint to surfaces such as walls, beams, and girders. Performs various other skilled trades-work such as installing signage, installing and repairing seawater pipes, valves, fittings, stovepipes, grates, chimney caps, animal care equipment and other sheet metal articles.
  • Conducts daily rounds: Ensure that all vital HMSC facility functions remain operational.
  • Other duties: Perform other duties such as room set-ups, cleaning, organizing the shop and all other duties as assigned. Perform work in, and enter permit-required confined and non-permit required confined spaces for cleaning, servicing, repair and construction purposes.

What We Require:

  • Four years of experience maintaining, repairing, and fabricating parts for machinery, tools, and equipment such as automobiles, trucks, hydraulic systems, lift trucks, etc.; OR completion of an approved Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticeship Program.

What You Will Need:

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
  • Must obtain Confined Space Supervisor certification within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Must obtain Forklift certification within 6 months of date of hire.
  • In accordance with the Department of Commerce Background Investigation policy, the incumbent must successfully obtain the appropriate security clearance within 90 days of the employment start date.
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified.
  • Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
  • This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess, and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence.

What We Would Like You to Have:

  • Experience with the installation and alignment of pumps and motors up to 50HP.
  • Knowledge of and experience with seawater treatment systems.
  • Knowledge of and experience with low voltage wiring controls.
  • Experience with welding tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a manner that shows respect and inclusivity for all co-workers.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule:

This position will often be required to lift or carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds and pushing or pulling carts weighing up to 50 pounds. This position may work in confined spaces. This position is required to work in and have access to student rooms and community areas of student residences while occupied by students. This position may work scheduled weekends and holidays. This is an on-call position and considered essential personnel, which may require attendance during emergency university closures and inclement weather. The position is based at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon, which is in a tsunami hazard zone.
