This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, hourly, intermittent (as needed) Able Mariner positions in the Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. The Able Mariner is part of a small team which functions to assist the Master on the Research Vessel (R/V) Elakha in the maintenance and repair of the vessel and its deck equipment, and to assist in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
Key Responsibilities
- 40% – Stands watch as helmsman, visual and radar lookout, and/or winch operator at sea. Stands security watch in ports other than home port; stands watch as assigned for a specific time.
- 35% – Cleans, paints and maintains ship’s hull, decks, bulkheads, equipment, masts, quarters, heads and tanks; assists in mooring and unmooring the vessel; assists in rigging and handling scientific gear; loads and unloads equipment and stores.
- 20% – Operates ship’s equipment such as winches, crane, boat, davits, anchor windlass, and capstan, while at sea; operates ship’s equipment such as cranes and winches while in ports to load and unload supplies and equipment; assists in shipboard operations as required during research work at sea.
- 5% – Actively participates in shipboard drills and emergency training, including training ashore. Maintains firefighting and safety equipment. Fights fires and administers first aid when required. Other duties as assigned.
What We Require
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma (or equivalent) and six months of maritime experience.
LICENSING / CERTIFICATIONS:
- Merchant Mariner’s Credential with an endorsement of Able Seaman, Special, or higher issued by the Coast Guard
- STCW endorsements as appropriate for this position.
- Ability to obtain a passport
- Ability to read, speak, and write in English
- Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position is required to work on board the R/V Elakha at sea on research cruises that may last from one day up to one week, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable. The incumbent must not be incapacitated by seasickness. As part of ongoing COVID-19 mitigation efforts, the unit may require PCR testing as well as quarantine and self-reporting for up to fourteen days prior to employment. Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work may be required. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs. The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
