Here at Orchard we are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Fabricator/Welder to join our manufacturing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for fabricating and welding metal components with precision and efficiency, contributing to the production of high-quality products. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with a strong mechanical aptitude and experience in various welding techniques, particularly MIG welding, to develop their skills within a professional environment.
Responsibilities
- Carry out coded welding on structural steel and fabricated assemblies in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Perform MIG / MAG coded welding (FM1 + FM2) using approved gases (M24) on EN 10025 / EN 1090 CE marked materials.
- Weld material thicknesses ranging from 1mm up to 50mm in all qualified welding positions including PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF (OVERHEAD / UPHILL).
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and blueprint drawings accurately.
- Set up welding equipment correctly, selecting appropriate consumables and parameters to match WPS requirements.
- Complete pre-weld checks and post-weld visual inspections to required acceptance criteria.
- Work alongside welding inspectors and NDT inspectors, supporting MPI / UT / RT activities as required.
- Rectify weld defects and carry out approved repairs in line with WPS and quality procedures.
- Maintain accurate weld traceability, records, and quality documentation in line with BMS requirements.
- Support manufacture of complex one-off prototypes as well as repeat production components.
- Ensure all welding activities comply with ISO 9001, EN 1090, and internal quality systems.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work area in accordance with Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) requirements.
- Work collaboratively with the wider production team to meet deadlines and output targets.
- Identify and report defects, material issues, or deviations from specification promptly.
- Assist with mentoring apprentices or less experienced welders when required.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives within the fabrication area.
Desirable Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Fabrication & Welding or equivalent qualification.
- CSCS or CCNSG Safety Passport.
- Previous experience in structural steel, modular construction, or off-site manufacturing.
- Understanding of lean manufacturing and quality-controlled production environment.
