Orbital is an AI-first industrial company building hardware from the atoms up. Our goal is to lead an industrial renaissance to advance critical technologies and secure our planet for generations to come. We’re starting with critical hardware for AI data centers to make them more performant and sustainable. Every Orbital product is invented with our AI platform — uniting AI-automated hardware engineering with AI-designed material science to achieve breakthrough real-world performance.

We have an ambitious mission and need excellent people in all our teams - AI research, operations, advanced materials, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and manufacturing. Working at Orbital means working in tightly integrated, vertically integrated teams. We’re looking for people who have a love of physical technology, curiosity in AI and a desire to learn.

The AI Residency program is an 18 month program targeting people with exceptional technical backgrounds but no professional or PhD experience in AI. This program is suitable for recent graduates in technical disciplines. As part of this program you will work on high impact AI projects at Orbital. Some example projects include:

  • Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR), post-training for engineering and materials discovery tasks
  • Building evolutionary systems that compose LLMs at test-time to solve scientific problems
  • Distributed training of large scale simulation/generative models of 3D systems

This is a unique opportunity because:

  • Orbital is a world leading research lab in AI for industrial engineering and materials discovery. You will work at the cutting edge of research in LLMs and AI more broadly applied to sciences.
  • Orbital is committed to open science. We publish and release the details of our work. This gives people who work for us an ability to build a profile in machine learning.
  • Orbital is committed to open source. You will get an opportunity to have concrete demonstrations of the excellence of your software engineering and other work.
  • Orbital is building technologies that have a physical, positive impact on the world. We build physical technologies. You can feel and touch the outcome of your work, and see these products make a difference in the world.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Strong mathematics and statistical knowledge, especially linear algebra
  • Strong algorithms and data structures knowledge
  • Strong programming skills and familiarity with high performance computing concepts
  • Examples of outstanding technical achievements
  • There is no requirement to have worked in AI or machine learning before

Upon reading Hamming's You and Your Research, you resonate with quotes such as:

  • "Yes, I would like to do first-class work"
  • "You should do your job in such a fashion that others can build on top of it, so they will indeed say, 'Yes, I've stood on so and so's shoulders and I saw further.'"
  • "Instead of attacking isolated problems, I made the resolution that I would never again solve an isolated problem except as characteristic of a class"

Orbital is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
