Orbital Marine Power is a visionary Scottish renewable energy company focused on the global application of its pioneering floating turbine technology that can supply predictable power from tidal streams and ocean currents, every day, regardless of the weather. The technology has already been proven at full scale, with the company operating the world's most powerful tidal turbine since July 2021. With global interest in tidal energy accelerating, Orbital is expanding its team to support larger scale manufacture, multi turbine delivery and the next stage of commercial growth.
What this role is about
You will contribute to the design, development and delivery of electrical systems that form the core of Orbital's tidal turbine technology. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on the design and lifecycle management of electrical, electronic and electromechanical systems critical to turbine performance, safety and reliability. It suits someone who enjoys complex system interaction, technical detail and cross discipline collaboration.
What you will be doing
- Design, specification, procurement, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of electrical and electromechanical systems including generator and drive equipment, switchgear, transformers, grid connection systems and subsea cabling.
- Support the Electrical Engineering Manager in ensuring work meets regulatory requirements and company safety rules.
- Liaise with controls, mechanical, hydraulic and communication engineers to ensure clear system interfaces.
- Support compliance with grid connection standards.
- Manage suppliers delivering technical services and equipment.
- Prepare technical documentation including design briefs and specifications.
- Lead or contribute to risk assessments including HAZOP and FMEA.
- Support junior engineers throughout design, build and commissioning.
What you will bring
- Degree in electrical engineering or related discipline.
- Five or more years of experience in electrical system design.
- Knowledge of standards including BS7671 and IEC 61508 or ISO 13849.
- Experience with variable speed drives and power converters.
- Good working knowledge of EPLAN and Trimble software.
- Ability to prepare structured engineering documentation.
- Aware of offshore electrical system requirements.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work within multi discipline engineering teams.
- Chartered Engineer status (desirable).
- Experience in renewables (desirable).
- HV design up to 33 kV (desirable).
- Experience managing subcontractors (desirable).
