The role Orbit are delighted to be recruiting for a Data Engineer to join us for a 12 month fixed‑term period, working on key projects within our Everyday Excellence programme. To be successful in this role, you'll need experience in practical delivery of the end to end Data Engineering activities, utilising Microsoft Azure technologies (including Azure DevOps, Azure SQL, Data Lake, Synapse and Fabric) for hosting a central data platform. You'll be experienced in creating processing pipelines and designing business aligned InfoMart data models ready for consumption in Power BI. In this role, you can expect to deliver continuous improvement using an Agile approach, ensuring robust supportability of solution design, including documentation, collaboration, and proactive monitoring. You'll be an integral part of the Data Engineering team, embedding best practices for the design, implementation, delivery and support of complex dataflows to connect operational systems for Data & Analytics utilisation in the business. This role is part of Technology & Information where you'll help us give colleagues the infrastructure, support and insight they need to be brilliant.
What you’ll achieve
- Responsible for the practical delivery of a range of data engineering activities within the central data team to produce relevant data models to support business reporting requirements.
- To support the Platform Lead - Data Engineering and working in partnership across the Transformation, Technology and Data directorate to design, build, deploy and support the security, networks and infrastructure required to host the central data platform.
- Ensure development, solution designs and ways of working are aligned to Orbit corporate policies on compliance for data governance.
- Embed and document best practice processes within the Data Engineering team.
- Support documentation standards and clear knowledge sharing across the team to improve onboarding and troubleshooting.
- Use Azure DevOps in line with Data Engineering ways of working for source control, development, deployment pipelines and testing.
- Ensuring any assigned DevOps activities have the required level of detail and time spent on the task is recorded.
- Review requirements, specifications and define test conditions.
- Identify issues and risks associated with work while being able to analyse and report test activities and results.
- Identify root causes of data issues and propose sustainable fixes, contributing to the team's continuous improvement cycle.
- Support the Transformation, Technology and Data directorate in embedding the end-to-end data and reporting process in Orbit.
- Work with Data Architecture and teams across Transformation, Technology and Data to elicit end user requirements, articulate these needs to the Data Engineering team for delivery and action requirements when work has been assigned to you.
- Participate in code reviews, mentoring opportunities, and adapt to evolving technologies such as Microsoft Fabric and Power Platform.
What you’ll bring
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Experience working on SQL database development solutions within Visual Studio.
- ETL skills (min SSIS) preferably Data Factory, Synapse and Fabric.
- Experience developing data warehouse solutions, modelling Fact and Dimension tables.
- Working knowledge of Azure DevOps methodologies for Agile projects.
- Using DevOps for source control, development, testing and deployment pipelines.
- Good communication skills able to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience gathering requirements, doing business analysis and working with SMEs to build/refine a requirements backlog.
- Ability to write technical documents and data dictionaries.
- Scripting experience with Python and PowerShell.
- Strong documentation and organisational skills to support effective knowledge transfer.
- Ability to manage time effectively and balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
