Provide assessment and treatment for individuals with severe and enduring mental health diagnoses in a complex care rehabilitation setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete the occupational therapy process with indirect supervision and seek direct support where required.
  • Hold a caseload and maintain occupation at the centre of practice through clinical decision-making and skills to assess, treat and evaluate care that meets service users' needs.
  • Conduct full and holistic assessments of occupational performance including self-care, productivity and leisure.
  • Facilitate individual and group interventions to meet therapeutic goals within the unit and local community.
  • Promote participation, inclusivity and the rights of people accessing OT services, their families and carers.
  • Exercise professional judgement to manage risk, including positive risk-taking.
  • Provide education, advice and support to service users, carers and colleagues within the remit of OT.
  • Document clinical information in accordance with organisational policy and professional standards.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, record CPD, and contribute to supervision, appraisal and reflective practice.
  • Support OT Assistants and Activity Workers, ensuring compliance with policies and reporting relevant issues.
  • Induct and support new staff within the OT department.
  • Adhere to legal, ethical and professional standards (RCOT, HCPC, Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Care Programme Approach).
  • Manage a designated workload autonomously and identify priorities.
  • Contribute to service development, audit, quality improvement and data collection.
  • Maintain registration with HCPC and promote occupational therapy within the organisation.
  • Maintain equipment and stock, ensuring resources are available for therapeutic activities.
  • Participate in departmental, team, professional and service meetings, contributing to quality care.
  • Ensure effective communication for discharge planning and related activities.
  • Attend statutory and mandatory training and support OT cover across Options for Care sites when needed.

Training and Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy or equivalent diploma.
  • Registered with HCPC.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Sound theoretical knowledge of OT.
  • Understanding of group work and a range of OT interventions in inpatient rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of current legislation relevant to mental health.
  • Experience of risk assessment and risk management.
  • Strong interpersonal, team working and communication skills.
  • Capacity to facilitate learning and support others.
  • Planning, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, email.
  • Typing and report writing skills.
  • Capacity to concentrate, manage conflicting demands and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with distressing or emotional circumstances.
  • Empathy, adaptability, flexibility and a commitment to service users' dignity and independence.
  • Experience of 6 months in mental health and inpatient rehabilitation and recovery settings.
