Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Colmore Row, Birmingham City Centre Salary: £65,000 – £70,000 Employment: Permanent, Full-Time Working Pattern: Hybrid – 3 days office / 2 days working from home The Opportunity We are working with an established and growing Building Services / MEP consultancy based in Birmingham City Centre, delivering innovative, sustainable and energy-efficient engineering solutions across a diverse range of projects. The business works closely with national contractors, developers and end users, providing mechanical and electrical design services from initial concept and feasibility through to detailed design, construction support and handover. With a strong pipeline of work and a significant number of residential and high-rise residential projects coming through, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing team and play a key role in delivering high-profile projects across the region and nationally. The successful candidate will combine strong technical knowledge of mechanical building services with the ability to think creatively, solve complex engineering challenges and contribute to the continued growth of the business. The Role As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will provide mechanical design and technical expertise across a range of building services projects, working closely with project leaders, engineers, contractors, clients and wider design teams. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of mechanical design packages, contribute to project delivery and provide technical support and mentoring to junior members of the team. Key Responsibilities Develop and deliver high-quality mechanical building services designs from concept through to construction and handover. Produce technically robust and commercially practical engineering solutions. Work collaboratively with project leaders, engineers, architects, contractors, clients and other members of the design team. Prepare design calculations, specifications, drawings, reports and technical documentation. Ensure project deliverables are accurate, coordinated and produced within agreed programmes. Contribute to design reviews, technical meetings and project progress discussions. Work across RIBA Stages 0–6, depending on project requirements. Support construction-stage queries, technical submissions, inspections and snagging. Project Leadership Take responsibility for mechanical design packages and ensure they are delivered to the required technical and programme standards. Provide technical guidance, support and mentoring to junior and trainee engineers. Work alongside senior engineers and project leaders to establish project requirements, programmes and resource needs. Identify potential design issues and develop effective solutions at an early stage. Lead by example, demonstrating a professional, collaborative and proactive approach. Technical Excellence Carry out mechanical building services calculations and technical assessments. Develop heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water and other mechanical building services solutions. Produce and review technical drawings, specifications and reports. Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation, British Standards, CIBSE guidance, Building Regulations and project-specific requirements. Maintain high standards of technical accuracy and quality throughout project delivery. Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of design standards, processes and digital delivery. Apply current industry best practice and sustainable design principles. Support the implementation of QA procedures across project deliverables. Digital Design & BIM Utilise modern digital design and BIM tools to develop coordinated mechanical building services solutions. Work collaboratively with BIM and design teams to ensure accurate and coordinated project information. Support clash detection, design coordination and the production of construction-ready information. Ensure digital deliverables meet project BIM standards and information requirements. Project Portfolio The consultancy has an exciting and growing project portfolio across a range of sectors, with particularly strong opportunities within residential development. About You We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who is confident working independently while also contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team. You will ideally have: Strong experience in mechanical building services design. Experience working within an MEP consultancy, contractor or similar engineering environment. Experience delivering projects through multiple RIBA stages. Strong knowledge of mechanical building services systems and design principles. Experience producing mechanical design calculations, specifications, drawings and reports. Good understanding of relevant Building Regulations, British Standards and CIBSE guidance. Experience with BIM and digital design processes. Strong communication and client-facing skills. The ability to manage your own workload and meet project deadlines. Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers. A proactive approach to problem-solving and technical design. Ideally, a relevant engineering qualification and/or CEng, IEng or working towards professional registration.
