We have an exciting opportunity working within both new and existing projects, creating bespoke, safe and cost-effective engineering solutions for our clients within the energy sector.
Optimus is now looking for a Principal Naval Architect / Structural Engineer to join our team in Aberdeen on a full-time, short-term contract basis. This role can be based in our Aberdeen or Glasgow office on a flexible hybrid working model. If you are passionate about Engineering, have some energy industry experience, or have transferable skills, then we would love to hear from you.
Key Duties:- Lead the development and verification of vessel or offshore structure designs, including hull form, hydrostatics, stability, structural strength, and hydrodynamic performance.
- Perform global and local strength analyses, fatigue and ultimate limit state assessments, and support detailed design activities using relevant software and industry codes.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable class, flag state, and international regulations (e.g., IMO, ISO, API, DNV, ABS, LR).
- Identify the scope of work required.
- Input to project plans and schedules.
- Identify areas of concern during any project or study.
- Produce cost-effective engineering solutions that are fit for purpose, safe and add value to address operational and maintenance issues in the design and liaise with colleagues for the best solution.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Ideally Chartered Engineer, or actively working towards chartership.
- Strong understanding of hydrodynamics, structures, stability, and marine systems integration.
- Experience in Structural Analysis techniques - beam modelling.
- Proficient with design and analysis tools (e.g., Rhino, GHS, Orca3D, ABAQUS, ANSYS, NAPA, or similar).
- High levels of proficiency in SESAM analysis packages - hydroD, Wadam, Submod, etc.
- High levels of proficiency in structural hull plate modelling using GeniE.
