We are recruiting a Fleet Engineer for an established commercial vehicle business, offering an excellent opportunity for an experienced HGV Technician to use their technical knowledge in a role focused on overseeing vehicle repairs, challenging third-party repairers and ensuring maintenance work is appropriate and cost-effective.

The ideal candidate will have a strong hands-on background working with HGVs, giving them the technical knowledge and credibility to question repair recommendations, assess the work being carried out and ensure vehicles are maintained to the correct standard. Alongside their technical ability, they will need strong communication skills, particularly when dealing with customers regarding repair costs and applicable recharges. The ability to challenge suppliers confidently while handling customer conversations constructively will be essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use your technical knowledge of HGVs to assess repair requirements and maintenance recommendations.
  • Challenge third-party repairers where necessary, questioning diagnoses, repair decisions, workmanship and costs.
  • Ensure repairs are appropriate, completed to the required standard and represent value for money.
  • Review repair costs and identify where work or charges need further investigation.
  • Communicate with customers regarding repairs and applicable recharges, explaining the reasons clearly and professionally.
  • Handle potentially difficult conversations with customers constructively, maintaining positive working relationships while ensuring appropriate costs are recovered.
  • Liaise with external repairers to resolve technical queries and ensure issues are dealt with effectively.
  • Help ensure HGVs remain safe, reliable and maintained to the appropriate standard.

About You

We are looking for someone who understands HGVs from a practical, hands-on perspective and has the confidence to apply that knowledge when dealing with external repairers and customers. You will ideally have previously worked as an HGV Technician and be comfortable assessing mechanical issues, understanding repair requirements and questioning work that does not appear justified. You will also be confident communicating with a range of people, able to challenge suppliers when required and explain repair decisions and recharges to customers in a professional, constructive manner.

You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience as an HGV Technician or in a similar commercial vehicle engineering role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of HGVs, vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • The confidence and credibility to challenge third-party repairers.
  • The ability to assess repair recommendations and question unnecessary work or costs.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to manage customer conversations around recharges professionally.
  • A practical, proactive approach with good judgement and attention to detail.

The Opportunity

A salary of £45,000-£47,000 is available for an experienced HGV engineering professional looking to apply their technical expertise in a role that combines vehicle knowledge, repair oversight, supplier challenge and customer communication. If you have a strong HGV technical background and the confidence to challenge repairers while maintaining positive customer relationships, we would like to hear from you.
