The Role

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Conventional Grinder - Universal to join a skilled engineering team on a permanent day shift. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting and operating universal grinding machinery, producing precision components to exacting tolerances and customer specifications. Experience using Jones & Shipman grinding machines is essential for this position. This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced grinder who takes genuine pride in their workmanship and is comfortable working with complex components where accuracy, surface finish and consistency are paramount. The company offers excellent overtime opportunities, making this an attractive position for an experienced grinder looking to maximise their earning potential while remaining on a Monday-to-Friday day shift.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Setting and operating Universal Grinding machinery
  • Working with Jones & Shipman grinding machines
  • Producing precision components to engineering drawings and specifications
  • Carrying out cylindrical, internal and external grinding operations where required
  • Working to extremely tight tolerances and demanding surface finish requirements
  • Selecting appropriate grinding wheels, tooling and machining parameters
  • Dressing and maintaining grinding wheels to achieve the required component specification
  • Setting machine parameters and making adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy
  • Reading and interpreting detailed engineering drawings
  • Using precision measuring equipment to inspect finished components
  • Carrying out first-off and in-process inspection
  • Identifying and resolving machining and quality issues
  • Maintaining accurate standards of workmanship throughout the production process
  • Supporting production targets and delivery schedules
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have proven experience as a Universal Grinder within a precision engineering environment and be confident setting and operating conventional grinding machinery. Strong experience with Jones & Shipman machines is essential.

You will also have:

  • Proven experience as a Conventional / Universal Grinder
  • Strong hands-on experience using Jones & Shipman grinding machines
  • Experience producing precision components to tight tolerances
  • Strong understanding of grinding processes and techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Experience selecting and dressing appropriate grinding wheels
  • Good knowledge of precision measuring equipment
  • Experience working with cylindrical grinding applications
  • Strong understanding of dimensional accuracy and surface finish requirements
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for the quality of your own work
  • A strong background within precision engineering, toolmaking or specialist machining

The following would be advantageous:

  • Experience with internal and external cylindrical grinding
  • Experience working on complex one-off and small-batch components
  • Experience within aerospace, motorsport, automotive or other high-precision manufacturing environments
  • Relevant engineering apprenticeship or qualification
  • Experience working to very tight tolerances and demanding customer specifications
