Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00am - 5:00pm

Optima are recruiting on behalf of a well-established, independent building merchants based in Croydon for an experienced Yard Manager. This is an excellent opportunity to join a successful and growing business that prides itself on delivering outstanding customer service and maintaining high operational standards.

This is a hands-on, working Yard Manager position. You'll be expected to lead by example, working alongside your team daily while ensuring the yard operates safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. This is not an office-based management role.

The Role

As Yard Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the yard, managing a team while ensuring excellent service is provided to all customers. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and motivating a team of operatives.
  • Leading from the front by working alongside the team in the yard.
  • Overseeing the safe and efficient loading and unloading of vehicles.
  • Ensuring customer collections are prepared accurately and on time.
  • Coordinating outbound deliveries to ensure orders leave as scheduled.
  • Managing stock levels and carrying out regular stock checks.
  • Liaising with the buying team to maintain appropriate stock availability.
  • Maintaining a clean, organised and safe working environment.
  • Providing excellent customer service and assisting customers when required.
  • Ensuring all health and safety procedures are followed.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Previous management or supervisory experience within a building merchants’ environment (essential).
  • Experience working within a builders' merchant or similar construction supplies business (essential).
  • A proactive, hands-on approach with strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple tasks.
  • A strong focus on customer service and operational efficiency.
  • Knowledge of stock control and yard operations.
  • A valid Forklift Truck (FLT) licence would be advantageous; however, full training and certification can be provided for the right candidate if required.
