Role Summary
As an Occupational Health Physician at Porton Down, you will play a crucial part in supporting employees who work with chemical, biological, and radiological materials. In this highly specialist environment, you will be responsible for delivering expert clinical assessments and providing ongoing health surveillance for staff who may be exposed to substances that could cause harm. A core part of the role involves reviewing blood test results and comparing these against previous baselines to monitor any changes in health status.
You will oversee and advise on accidental exposure cases, offer reassurance and support to affected employees, and guide managers on an individual's fitness to continue working in these specialist areas. As a key member of the emergency response team, you may also be required to support onsite incidents and oversee the use of antidotes or medications following any exposure events.
The role includes working closely with the “support2ops” team, assessing staff who travel globally to ensure they are medically fit for deployment. You will contribute to safety-critical assessments for employees who handle chemical and biological weapons, ensuring strict compliance with health and safety standards.
You will be part of a multidisciplinary occupational health team and will collaborate with OH professionals, the chief medical director, and specialist departments across the organisation. Given the nature of the work carried out at Porton Down including research involving chemical agents, biological materials, defence countermeasures, and animal testing.
Who Are We Looking For?
- Diploma in Occupational Medicine (Dip Occ Med) or AFOM/MFOM
- Previous experience as an Occupational Health Physician (OHP) with a minimum of 6 months experience
- A Medical Practitioner who has, since full registration, consolidated their skills and continued their medical education in line with the requirements of continuing medical education/continuing professional development
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Good understanding of the role and implications of clinical governance
