Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Occupational Health Advisor to join our dedicated Health Surveillance team in a fully home-based role. This position is specifically focused on the delivery, review and clinical governance of health surveillance services and is not a typical Occupational Health Advisor role. There is no routine sickness absence management, no standard case management workload and no face-to-face clinical activity. The role involves a varied mix of clinical advisory work and quality assurance activity. Approximately half of the working time will be spent supporting the clinical escalation line, responding to technical and clinical queries from technicians and colleagues. The remainder of the role will focus on follow-up consultations related to health surveillance outcomes and fitness-to-work medicals, completion of fitness-to-work certifications, case closures and the clinical auditing and review of technician-led work. Whilst unlikely, when service demand reduces, the post holder may support wider occupational health activity, including case management, drawing on their full OHA skillset.
Applicants must have the core skills and experience of an Occupational Health Advisor, alongside demonstrable experience in health surveillance. Recent practical experience in delivering spirometry and audiometry is essential, and candidates must have completed the relevant training courses in these areas. Experience in advising on HAVS Tier 1–2, skin surveillance and fitness-to-work medicals is required. A formal occupational health qualification and a HAVS qualification are not essential for this role. The role is fully home-based, however attendance at training is required. This includes an initial two-week training programme delivered in a single block, which will involve overnight stays, as well as periodic training throughout the year. All travel expenses are reimbursed, and hotel accommodation can be arranged in advance.
Who Are We Looking For?
- Registered Nurse on the NMC register
- An experienced Occupational Health Advisor with a strong understanding of occupational health practice and legislation
- Demonstrable experience working within a health surveillance–focused role
- Recent, practical experience in delivering and interpreting spirometry and audiometry, with relevant training completed
- Experience in assessing and advising on HAVS Tier 1–2, skin surveillance and fitness-to-work medicals
- Confidence in providing remote clinical advice and support to occupational health technicians and nursing colleagues
- Ability to review, quality assure and audit technician-led health surveillance activity to ensure clinical standards and compliance
- Strong clinical judgement with the ability to translate surveillance outcomes into clear, practical fitness-to-work advice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience completing fitness-to-work certifications and case closures
- Comfortable working in a fully home-based role with minimal face-to-face clinical activity
- Willingness and ability to travel for mandatory training, including overnight stays
