This role could suit an approved electrician who wants consistent, interesting work across electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure projects. You will be involved in operational and new-build substations, grid connection works and associated LV/HV electrical installations. The work is planned, safety-led and delivered for major clients in the utilities and energy sectors.

The type of projects you will be working on include:

  • Primary and secondary substations, including new builds, extensions and refurbishments
  • Grid connection projects supporting renewable energy developments
  • LV and HV cable installations, glanding and terminations
  • Control and protection wiring, marshalling panels and relay panels
  • Substation auxiliary systems, including lighting, small power, earthing and containment
  • Testing, inspection and commissioning support prior to energisation

Work is typically carried out within live or safety-critical environments, following strict procedures, permits and client standards.

What you will actually be doing day to day includes:

  • Carrying out electrical installation works to drawings and specifications
  • Installing and terminating LV and HV cabling within substations
  • Completing containment, earthing and auxiliary systems
  • Supporting control and protection installation activities
  • Assisting with testing, inspection and commissioning works
  • Working safely under RAMS, permits and site-specific procedures
  • Coordinating with supervisors, engineers and other trades on site

What you will need to be considered:

  • Approved Electrician status (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent)
  • Strong experience in industrial or utilities environments
  • Ability to read and work from electrical drawings and schematics
  • A safety-first mindset suited to live substations and controlled sites
  • CSCS or equivalent site access certification
  • Flexibility to travel across the Central Belt for project work
  • Experience of substations, grid, renewables or heavy industrial projects is a strong advantage, but not limited to one specific client or network.

Why electricians stay in roles like this:

  • Work is planned properly, not reactive firefighting
  • Projects are technically interesting and repeatable
  • You are trusted to do the job, not micromanaged
  • You build experience that actually strengthens your CV
  • Safety and quality are taken seriously, not just talked about

If you are an approved electrician based in or around Glasgow and want steady, technically credible substation work across the Central Belt, apply with a CV. A conversation is often easier than a long application.
