At OpsMill, we believe the time for this transformation is now. We are a commercial open-source company with an active community and a conviction that AI will fundamentally reshape how engineering work gets done. We are building the next generation of infrastructure data management, and we need our engineering organization to be the blueprint for this AI-native, forward-thinking, community-engaged future. This role is for a leader who sees AI, Open Source, and high-velocity scaling as an integrated strategy for building a truly modern, impactful engineering organization.

OpsMill is entering a new phase of growth. The current engineering team has built a strong foundation: a healthy culture, meaningful open-source momentum, and a platform that solves complex problems for automation teams. Over the next year, we plan to expand the engineering organization significantly while strengthening the systems that help teams scale—clear ownership, consistent execution, sustainable delivery practices, and an environment where AI-assisted development becomes part of everyday work. We are looking for a Head of Engineering to guide this next stage: building on what already works, increasing leadership bandwidth, and putting the structures in place that help a growing team stay fast, aligned, and high-quality.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Scale the engineering organization from 8 to 25+ engineers while maintaining clarity, ownership, and quality—evolving team structure and architecture to support product expansion without losing velocity.
  • Build and lead an AI-first engineering organization where AI is central to daily execution: design, implementation, testing, documentation, and operations—not a side experiment but core to how software is built.
  • Implement Data-Driven Engineering Management: Establish, track, and continuously improve key engineering metrics (e.g., DORA metrics, lead time, code quality, stability, community contribution rates) to inform resourcing decisions, identify bottlenecks, and drive continuous improvement across the development lifecycle.
  • Deepen open-source community engagement by ensuring engineering practices, tooling, and documentation make external contributions easy, safe, and rewarding while keeping internal delivery momentum strong.
  • Own engineering excellence and execution: ensure predictable, high-quality delivery with strong focus on user experience, architectural direction, and intentional technical debt management.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing engineering leadership group, creating clarity around roles, expectations, and decision-making while fostering a culture of accountability, pragmatism, and continuous improvement.
  • Sponsor AI-assisted workflows, tools, and agent-based development practices, encouraging experimentation while maintaining strong engineering fundamentals.
  • Manage cross-functional collaboration with community members and customers who contribute to the product, making external engagement natural and valued by internal teams.
  • Manage engineering spend within startup constraints—prioritise where investment matters, cut where it doesn’t.

What You Bring

  • 8+ years in engineering with 3+ years in engineering leadership, including experience scaling teams in a startup or scale-up environment (ideally from seed/Series A to Series B/C stage).
  • Proven ability to partner with Product leadership, translating product vision into technical execution while feeding back constraints and opportunities constructively.
  • Strong conviction about AI’s impact on software engineering and eagerness to experiment with AI-native development practices, tools, and workflows.
  • Solid technical background with hands-on experience building complex distributed systems, infrastructure tooling, or developer platforms—credible enough that engineers trust your technical judgment.
  • Track record of building scalable engineering organizations while maintaining quality, velocity, and team culture through periods of growth, supported by a data-driven approach to measuring and improving engineering performance.
  • Comfortable leading distributed, remote-first teams with strong async communication skills and ability to create clarity across time zones.
  • Pragmatic, outcome-oriented mindset that balances engineering excellence with shipping value to users and managing technical debt with transparency.
  • Experience defining and managing departmental budgets, demonstrating the ability to balance engineering needs with financial prudence.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience in infrastructure automation, network automation, NetDevOps, or related domains.
  • Experience working with open-source projects and external contributors, understanding how to balance community engagement with commercial product development.
  • Previous Head of Engineering or VP Engineering experience in a commercial open-source company.
  • Direct experience implementing AI-assisted development workflows or AI agent-based tooling.
  • Background working with Python-based backend systems and GraphQL APIs.

Why OpsMill?

  • The people: Work alongside world-class engineers who have built and scaled automation platforms in production. Daily technical challenges with smart colleagues who push you to grow.
  • The product: Shape Infrahub based on real customer needs. Your input directly influences features, integrations, and roadmap priorities.
  • The mission: We are making enterprise-grade infrastructure automation accessible to any organization. Open-source at the core, production-ready out of the box. This is a multi-year journey, not a quarterly sprint.
