An innovative technology company specialising in imaging, metrology, and visualisation systems is seeking a Lead Concept Engineer to join its Concept Development team. This team sits at the forefront of technical innovation, driving early-stage research and development to create breakthrough technologies and intellectual property. The role focuses on taking ideas from concept through to working proof-of-concept models that help define future product roadmaps.
You will work in a highly creative R&D environment with direct access to development laboratories, optical benches, rapid prototyping equipment, 3D printers, and industry-standard software tools such as CREO, Zemax, and Mathcad. If you are excited by the intersection of technology, ergonomics, and innovation and enjoy building and testing new system concepts from the ground up, this role offers a rare opportunity to shape the next generation of products.
Key Responsibilities- Create and develop innovative concepts for next-generation optical, digital, and metrology imaging systems
- Contribute to group-level technology and product strategy through system-level thinking
- Design, build, and test mock-ups and breadboard prototypes to validate early concepts
- Conduct competitive analysis and technology benchmarking to identify innovation opportunities
- Identify and integrate emerging technologies that enhance future products
- Collaborate closely with internal engineering teams and external technology partners
- Ensure technical, ergonomic, and application requirements are aligned across disciplines
- Define and manage specifications with external partners
- Manage concept projects, reporting progress, milestones, and risks to senior stakeholders
- Degree (Bachelors, Masters, or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Optoelectronics, Electronic Engineering, or Mechatronics
- Minimum 5 years experience in an R&D or advanced engineering environment
- Strong technical creativity with a hands-on approach to problem-solving
- Solid understanding of optics
- Practical experience with mock-up development and breadboard prototyping
- Experience in image processing, metrology, or mechatronics
- Awareness of quality, safety, and ergonomic design principles
- Strategic and structured thinker with strong analytical skills
- Passionate about concept creation and early-stage system design
- Confident communicator across multidisciplinary teams
- Collaborative, open-minded, and comfortable moderating diverse viewpoints
- Curious, proactive, and quick to adopt new tools and technologies
- Strong sense of accountability and commitment to quality and continuous improvement
