Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024/2025 Commonwealth Fellowship / Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Program. This program is designed for mid-career professionals from low and middle income countries who wish to spend time at a UK host organization working in their sector for professional development.
The purpose of the Commonwealth Fellowship / Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Program is to provide professionals with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in their given sector, and to have a catalytic effect on their workplaces. The intended beneficiaries are mid-career professionals with at least five years of relevant work experience, working in organizations in low and middle income Commonwealth countries.
These fellowships are offered under six development themes:
- Science and technology for development
- Strengthening health systems and capacity
- Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship
- Strengthening global peace, security and governance
- Strengthening resilience and response to crises
- Access, inclusion, and opportunity
Eligibility for the Commonwealth Fellowship / Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Program
To be eligible for these fellowships, prospective fellows must be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person. They must also be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country, have at least five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant work experience, and be in employment at the time of application at an organization that they will return to upon completion of the fellowship.
Additionally, they must provide at least two references, one of which must be from their current employer, and not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship / Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Program within the last five years. Finally, they must not be seeking to undertake an academic program of research or study.
Benefits of the Commonwealth Fellowship / Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Program
- Complimentary return airfare from the Fellow’s country of origin to the UK.
- Reimbursement of the standard visa application fee.
- Monthly stipend (or pro rata) throughout the award period at a rate of £2,057 per month, or £2,553 per month for those based in the London metropolitan area (2023/24 rates).
- Full assessment of needs and eligibility for additional financial support for Fellows with disabilities.
- Arrival allowance of up to £1,000 (2023/24 rates), including an allocation for warm clothing.
- Host organisations can provide up to £3,000 per Fellow for short courses/conferences and travel to other UK organizations as part of the program.
