About the Role

HCRG Care Group’s Warwickshire 0–5 Children’s Services are looking to support the future of Health Visiting by offering the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) Health Visitor programme to passionate registered Nurses and Midwives who want to develop their careers in public health. As a SCPHN Health Visitor Student, you will gain specialist knowledge and practical experience in promoting the health and wellbeing of infants, young children and families across a range of community settings. You will learn how to assess and identify the health needs of families and communities and deliver evidence-based interventions to improve health outcomes. You will join our team on a full-time, fixed-term 12-month Band 5 contract (paid at the mid-point of Band 5). On successful completion of the programme, you will qualify as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor) and will be eligible to apply for Band 6 Health Visitor roles. Base locations are available in Rugby and Stratford-upon-Avon, with placements and community-based working delivered across the wider Warwickshire Business Unit.

Job Responsibilities

The programme is a one-year full-time course, combining:

  • 50% academic study at postgraduate Level 7
  • 50% supervised practice within Warwickshire Health Visiting services

The university programme will provide the theoretical knowledge and skills needed to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to children and families, including safeguarding and child protection. Practice placements will be supported by experienced Practice Assessors, Practice Supervisors and the wider Health Visiting team, working closely with the university to ensure seamless links between theory and practice. The programme runs for 52 weeks, with annual leave built into the course. Annual leave dates are set by the university and are non-negotiable.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated Nurses or Midwives who have:

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse (Adult, Child, Mental Health or Learning Disabilities) or Registered Midwife
  • A minimum of two years’ post-registration experience
  • Eligibility to meet NMC requirements for undertaking an approved SCPHN programme
  • Degree-level qualification or evidence of ability to study successfully at Level 7
  • Awareness of the SCPHN role and its public health focus
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Evidence of reflective practice and commitment to continuing professional development
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • Good IT skills relevant to both study and practice
  • Motivation and commitment to undertake the SCPHN programme
  • Professionalism, resilience and emotional intelligence
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to the demands of the programme
  • Ability to travel to community settings across Warwickshire and to the relevant university campus (which may be Wolverhampton or Birmingham)
  • Experience in Health Visiting, School Nursing or other community-based services

Additional Information

As this is a community-based role, a valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes is desirable. If successful, this role will be offered as a 12-month fixed-term contract under HCRG Care Group’s Agenda for Change terms and conditions.
