We are looking for a motivated Operational meteorologist to join our team and support the delivery of accurate, timely, and reliable weather forecasts. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in meteorology, solid analytical skills, and the ability to clearly communicate weather insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and deliver daily 36-hour forecasts for designated zones by 12:30 hrs.
- Include in the forecast: minimum air and road surface temperatures, likelihood and type of weather hazards (ice, hoar frost, snow, fog, strong winds, rain).
- Produce evening forecast updates (17:00–12:00 next day) covering all forecast parameters.
- Provide a daily 2–5 day forecast for the Cumberland Council area, including trends, confidence levels, and comments on significant temperature variations.
- Assess weather-related risks and apply readiness colour coding (Green, Amber, Red) during the winter period (1st October – 30th April).
- Monitor, analyse, and forecast road surface conditions, including ice, snow, frost, rainfall forecast, including soil moisture, river levels and flood warnings
- Prepare synoptic overviews and provide additional comments where necessary.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in meteorology or PhD in meteorology or a related field.
- Proven experience in weather forecasting, preferably in a commercial setting (preferably in the transport or logistics industry).
- Proficiency in meteorological software and tools for data analysis and modelling.
- Previous experience in applied/operational forecasting preferably in transportation or winter weather
- Expertise in surface temperature forecasting, road weather modelling, and ice prediction
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex weather data.
- Excellent communication skills to convey weather forecasts and analysis effectively.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- A passion for meteorology and a drive to continuously learn and improve.
