As a Content Designer (Consultant), you’ll join an inclusive community to help progress your career while having a direct impact on millions of people, by crafting content that is clear, accessible and user centred.

The role

  • You’ll design content that helps users complete their goals.
  • You’ll work with other user-centred design specialists, including user researchers and interaction designers, to help solve complex client problems.
  • You’ll create content based on insights from user research and data, applying best-practice content design principles.
  • You will make complex ideas and processes easy to understand.
  • You’ll ensure that work is carried out in accordance with Opencast's quality, environmental, and information security policies and procedures, as well as applicable customer policies, standards, and procedures while working on client.

If you take more of a leadership role on projects, you may be more suited to our senior content designer role when we are advertising.

Requirements

  • This role involves weekly on-site work, and you’ll be required to travel regularly to client locations across the UK.
  • We’re looking for people who value in‑person collaboration, enjoy building strong relationships, and are passionate about delivering solutions that make a real difference for our clients.
  • Due to the nature of this role, you must either hold active Security Check (SC) clearance or be eligible and willing to undergo the clearance process.
  • SC clearance is granted in line with UK Government security vetting requirements. Typically, applicants must have UK citizenship and have lived continuously in the UK for at least the past five years, with no single absence exceeding 28 consecutive days.
  • Nationality and immigration status may also be considered as part of the vetting process.
  • We are unable to progress applications from candidates who do not meet these requirements.

We’ll want you to demonstrate experience of designing content to meet user needs. You don’t need to have had the job title ‘content designer’ before. In your CV and interview, please show how you have:

  • Used content design to make complex ideas and processes easy to understand
  • Planned and written content to meet evidenced user needs
  • Ensured your work is inclusive and accessible
  • Taken a supportive role in user research to test content
  • Applied a style guide to your work

As well as content design skills, there are essential core skills you’ll need to be a great consultant. In the interview, please show how you have:

  • Taken a methodical and considered approach to solving content problems
  • Planned your own tasks, to achieve the objectives of your project
  • Respectfully challenged decisions or solutions you don’t agree with

In the interview, we’ll ask you to present a piece of work which demonstrates these experiences. We’ll also ask you questions based on these topics.

Some areas of experience are not essential but relevant to the role:

  • Designing to UK government service standards
  • The Government Digital Service assessment process
  • Using prototyping tools
  • Planning and facilitating workshops.

Where you’ll work

This role requires regular on‑site attendance at our HQ, hub offices, and client sites, as well as the ability to work from home. Applicants must be able to travel to offices and client sites across the UK as part of their normal working arrangements, as travel is essential for fulfilling the responsibilities of the role.
