This is a senior, hands-on role at the engine room of our UK car insurance business. You will define and execute the strategy to optimize our underwriting and pricing. You will be accountable to grow the depth and breadth of our car proposition, getting the most out of our insurer panel to improve key metrics from quotability to conversion. We’ve launched fast, have strong momentum and an ambitious growth plan. We need someone who has actually done this before at a leading motor insurer and can bring that know-how in setting the roadmap, driving delivery, and maximising the value we create. You will report to the UK Country Manager and work hand-in-hand with our Commercial, Product, Pricing and Data teams.
What you'll do
- You will own the performance of our motor portfolio, driving measurable improvements in quotability, competitiveness and value.
- Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the underwriting and pricing strategy for the motor portfolio, and using data to identify and create a plan to close gaps;
- Sharpening retail pricing and risk-selection to improve competitiveness and conversion of our car proposition while protecting margin and loss ratio;
- Pushing our insurer panel hard by running regular trading sessions, challenging appetite and pricing, and holding partners to account on performance;
- Owning and prioritising the pricing and underwriting roadmap, turning a backlog of initiatives into sequenced, measurable delivery;
- Leading the design and optimisation of new propositions and features such as expanding into telematics and multi-car, bringing hands-on experience of how these are built and run;
- Bringing deep technical pricing and underwriting expertise to guide the wider commercial team, embedding rigour and a test-and-learn approach;
- Defining and tracking the KPIs that matter (e.g. quotability, panel depth, conversion, margin and loss ratio) and using them to drive decisions;
- Working closely with Commercial, Data, Product and Engineering teams to translate pricing strategy into live changes quickly and safely;
- Managing relationships with data, enrichment and pricing-technology partners to get the most from our rating and enrichment capability;
- Working within our regulatory framework, including FCA pricing rules and fair value, so that commercial decisions always deliver good customer outcomes.
This is a role for someone who wants to make a tangible impact, move the dial quickly, and build the pricing and underwriting capability of a scaling business.
Essential skills and experience
- Around 10 years' experience in motor insurance pricing and/or underwriting, ideally at a leading UK motor insurer or broker;
- A demonstrable, hands-on track record of moving the dial on quotability, competitiveness and conversion through pricing and appetite changes;
- Deep technical pricing and underwriting expertise across personal-lines motor;
- Hands-on experience launching and optimising motor products and features such as PNCD, telematics, multi-car and/or premium finance;
- Strong commercial acumen — able to connect pricing and appetite decisions to revenue, margin and loss-ratio outcomes;
- Highly data-literate, comfortable working with large datasets and analytics to drive decisions;
- The credibility and confidence to challenge and push insurer and underwriting partners to get the best out of them;
- The ability to own a roadmap and drive delivery in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
Desirable skills and experience
- Experience in a price-comparison (PCW) or embedded / white-label distribution environment;
- Familiarity with rating engines, enrichment data and modern pricing platforms;
- Experience using AI and emerging technologies in pricing or underwriting;
- Exposure to premium finance and add-on product economics;
- People management or mentoring experience;
- Working knowledge of the FCA general insurance pricing rules and fair value requirements;
- Hands-on and happy to get into the detail — a builder, not just an overseer;
- Bias to action with a focus on tangible impact;
- Data-and evidence-led in how they make decisions;
- Collaborative and energetic, and thrives in a young, fast-paced team;
- Comfortable with ambiguity and able to create structure where processes are still developing;
- A strong communicator who can influence partners and colleagues alike.
This role is great for:
This role is ideal for an experienced motor pricing or underwriting specialist who wants to step up and own a portfolio end-to-end, rather than sit within a narrow function at a large insurer. It would suit someone who:
- Has a real technical depth in motor pricing and underwriting and wants to put it to work directly;
- Enjoys building and optimising products and pricing rather than just maintaining them;
- Wants the autonomy to shape a roadmap and see their work go live quickly;
- Is motivated by commercial impact and good customer outcomes in equal measure;
- Wants to work in a data-and AI-led insurance and technology business as it scales.
This role is based in London, with a hybrid working model of at least three days a week in our London office to support close collaboration with the commercial, product and data teams.

About us
Open is a global tech company on a mission to make it easy for everyone to get the most from their insurance. We launched in Australia in 2016, opened our London office in 2022 and our Manchester office this year, rebuilding one of the world's least digitally mature industries from the ground up.
We do this through three products that work together to put customers first, from start to finish. Open Embedded lets businesses offer insurance directly inside their own apps and websites. Open Agentic uses AI safely and responsibly to guide customers through buying a policy. Open Intel spots the moments when someone is most likely to need cover and helps us reach them at the right time, in a helpful way.
We're a Certified B Corporation with a global team across the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Diverse perspectives and lived experiences make us better at what we do. Open is for builders — people who are intellectually curious, courageous and reject the idea that “it can't be done”.
