Senior Front End Engineer

Who we are looking for?

We’re on the lookout for a talented and passionate Senior Frontend Engineer, someone who wants to be a significant part of a small, close-knit, collaborative cross-functional team that loves working together to build incredible products.

• You have a particular focus on CSS architecture and JavaScript development. You appreciate design and meticulously crafting web interfaces while also striving to create high-quality, modular, and maintainable code.
• With an exceptional eye for detail, you will be focused on excellence and should be a creative, passionate and enthusiastic individual who has an active interest in the industry with the ambition to continue learning and growing within your role.
• You are able to work as part of a team but at times, autonomously. You are detail-oriented and mindful of writing clean code whilst displaying a real passion for the web development industry. Strong communication skills and an ability to communicate and generate ideas, theories, and technical concepts are also essential.
• You’re enthusiastic about tech and keen to learn new front-end libraries, frameworks and techniques. You enjoy experimenting and trying out new languages, tech stacks and development techniques whereby you demonstrate your passion for what you do.
• You will be responsible for helping maintain and enhance the technology stack, hence, it is essential you are able to bring your own flair and enthusiasm to the exciting and challenging products we have in the works utilising technologies such as NodeJS, Remix, Shopify’s Hydrogen, Sanity, Storybook, Prisma and Planetscale.

What the job involves

As a Senior Frontend Engineer at OSC, you\’ll have the exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and play a crucial role in the future of our digital transformation. This transformation will propel OSC into the next phase of our mission, empowering learners to change their careers.

• Working within a small, agile team, you will help lead the ongoing developments of a newly launched cutting-edge e-commerce website and an exciting bespoke academic platform. Your responsibilities will include developing and enhancing the user interface of these platforms, leveraging your expertise to select the most appropriate tools and technologies to support our technology roadmap.

• As a passionate Senior Frontend Engineer, you will champion innovation and uphold high standards of attention to detail and code quality. You\’ll adhere to best practices and actively challenge the team to maintain these standards. This position involves leading technical initiatives, mentoring team members, and contributing to the development of OSC’s platforms.

• Your role will also involve instilling your ideas across the team and the business, driving forward our digital transformation projects. Collaboration is key, and you\’ll work closely with cross-functional teams to continuously improve processes and drive innovation throughout the organisation

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

• Mentor and coach team members to encourage their career growth.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering team.
• Conduct code reviews and champion best practices across the team.
• Investigate emergent technologies and serve as a technical authority on platform development.
• Support the recruitment process for hiring new team members.
• Lead future projects on OSC’s digital products, overseeing projects from conception to delivery, managing timelines, coordinating with other departments, and supporting the delivery in its entirety.
• Actively collaborate with the digital product manager & marketing, academic, and sales departments to help align frontend engineering with OSC\’s objectives, ensuring seamless integration and support for strategic initiatives.
• Enhance stakeholder communication by representing the engineering team in meetings, contributing to business development discussions, and presenting project updates to leadership.

Engineering

• Develop new features for OSC’s ecommerce and cloud-based platforms, adding value for customers, students, and employees.
• Collaborate with the engineering team to scope technical enhancements on digital products.
• Maintain and optimise the existing codebase, deploying fixes and general improvements..
• Help manage cloud infrastructure, including deployment pipelines, resource scaling, monitoring, and alerting.
• Provide technical support for codebase-related issues.
• Identify and resolve bugs.

Product Development

• Architect and engineer product enhancements to OSC’s digital products.
• Support the technical discovery of new initiatives.
• Use data and insights to generate ideas for platform enhancement.
• Ensure effective collection of useful data and generation of insights.
• Make partnerships with external providers and take the lead on initiatives that will drive our technology offering forward.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience developing responsive, accessible web applications.
• Expertise in React and modern JavaScript frameworks, with strong TypeScript proficiency.
• Deep knowledge of HTML, CSS/SCSS, and best practices in UI/UX design.
• Experience building and maintaining reusable components while adhering to industry best practices.
• Proven ability to solve complex problems and drive innovation in web development.
• Strong understanding of API development and consumption, including integrating third-party services.
• Hands-on experience with Shopify and its React-based framework, Hydrogen.
• Familiarity with headless architectures and headless CMS platforms like Sanity.io.
• Proficiency with package managers (Yarn/NPM), task runners (Vite, ESBuild), and design tools (Figma).
• Experience implementing front-end testing strategies (UI, E2E, Unit, Integration).
• Strong focus on performance optimisation and best practices in web application efficiency.
• Experience with analytics platforms such as Google Analytics 4 (GA4) for tracking and data insights.
• Knowledge of monitoring and error tracking platforms like Sentry to enhance application reliability.
• Comfortable working with CI/CD workflows (e.g., GitHub Actions).
• Passion for continuous learning, keeping up with modern frontend technologies and best practices.

Desirable Skills

• An understanding of the react framework, Remix
• An understanding of Cloud-based Infrastructure (eg. AWS, Fly.io)
• An understanding of containerised development environments such as Docker
• Understanding of monorepo development environments (Nx, Turbo).
