Excellent opportunity for an IT Support or Infrastructure Engineer looking for a varied, field-based position where you will become the go-to technical contact for multiple operational sites across the South East. This organisation is a well-established national business providing essential services to customers across the public and private sectors. Operating from a large network of UK locations, they are continuing to invest in their technology, infrastructure and operational capabilities.

The wider group employs approximately 2,600 people across 72 sites, providing the stability of a national organisation alongside plenty of local responsibility and autonomy. In this varied role, you will support the network, IT and communications infrastructure across sites throughout the South East. You'll troubleshoot LAN and WAN equipment, install hardware, support Microsoft 365 and Windows 11 environments, and assist with data and voice cabling. You will also coordinate third-party suppliers and act as an escalation point between central support teams and site-based colleagues.

The territory stretches from Southampton across to Kent and as far north as Cardington, with much of the current activity concentrated around Rainham and the wider Kent area. This is a genuinely field-based role, so you'll need to be comfortable travelling between sites and managing your own workload.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience supporting networks and end-user IT equipment within a multi-site, field-based or operational environment. You will need a full UK driving licence and should be confident working independently, communicating with non-technical colleagues and representing the IT function on site. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a secure and nationally recognised organisation in an autonomous position offering technical variety and the chance to become the trusted face of IT across the region.

The Role

  • Supporting IT, network and communications infrastructure across multiple sites
  • Troubleshooting LAN, WAN, switches, routers and wireless access points
  • Installing and decommissioning laptops, desktops, printers, scanners and mobile devices
  • Supporting Microsoft 365 and Windows 11 environments
  • Assisting with data and voice cabling, termination and site interconnections
  • Acting as an escalation point for incidents affecting operational sites
  • Coordinating third-party suppliers during installations and fault resolution
  • Producing and maintaining accurate technical documentation

Monday to Friday, approximately 9:00am-5:30pm, with flexibility around start times. Field based across the South East from Southampton to Kent & Rainham.

The Person

  • Experience in an IT Support, Infrastructure, Field Engineer or similar position
  • Practical knowledge of network infrastructure and LAN/WAN troubleshooting
  • Experience supporting Microsoft 365 and Windows 11
  • Familiarity with laptops, desktops, printers, wireless equipment and handheld scanners
  • Any experience with data and voice cabling or termination would be advantageous
  • Comfortable working independently across geographically dispersed sites
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills
  • Full UK driving licence and willing to travel regularly across the South East

How to prepare for a job interview at Onyx-Conseil

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
