About the Role
As a Housing Litigation Paralegal, you will support fee earners with the management of housing litigation matters from initial instruction through to settlement or conclusion.
You will have responsibility for progressing your own caseload where appropriate, maintaining strong client relationships, and ensuring files are progressed efficiently and in accordance with relevant procedures and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and progress a caseload of Housing Disrepair and Housing Litigation claims .
- Review new instructions, assess case merits, and obtain relevant information and supporting evidence.
- Draft letters of claim, witness statements, pleadings, applications, and other legal correspondence.
- Prepare and issue court proceedings and ensure court deadlines are complied with.
- Liaise with courts, defendants, housing associations, local authorities, landlords, counsel, experts, and other third parties.
- Instruct and liaise with experts, including surveyors and other relevant professionals, where required.
- Review and organise documentary evidence, photographs, medical evidence, tenancy documents, and disrepair reports.
- Prepare court bundles, disclosure documentation, schedules, and other litigation documents.
- Assist with settlement negotiations and prepare matters for hearings where required.
- Draft schedules of costs and assist with costs-related matters.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records and ensure all files are progressed in accordance with internal procedures.
- Provide regular updates to clients and deliver a high standard of client care throughout the litigation process.
- Work closely with solicitors and other fee earners to achieve successful outcomes for clients.
- Meet agreed performance, quality, financial, and file progression targets.
Qualifications & Experience
- 6 months to 3 years' experience in litigation , with experience in Housing Disrepair / Housing Litigation highly desirable .
- Previous experience handling a caseload of housing disrepair claims is preferred.
- Good working knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) and court procedures.
- Experience drafting legal correspondence, statements of case, witness statements, applications, and other court documents.
- Experience issuing proceedings and progressing litigation matters.
- Understanding of housing disrepair claims and the legal obligations of landlords.
- Good understanding of litigation costs and the financial risks associated with litigation.
- Experience dealing with clients and third parties in a professional legal environment.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a wider team.
Desirable Skills
- Previous experience working within a Housing Disrepair, Housing Litigation, Civil Litigation, or Property Litigation team.
- Experience dealing with housing associations, local authorities, landlords, and their solicitors.
- Familiarity with Proclaim or other legal case management systems .
- Experience working to case progression, billing, conversion, and performance targets.
- A commercially aware and pragmatic approach to case management.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify issues within case documentation.
