As a Behaviour Mentor within the Student Experience directorate, you will play a vital frontline role in ensuring our students feel safe, supported, and empowered to succeed. Working as part of the Safeguarding and Wellbeing team, you’ll respond to emerging concerns, assess and manage risk, and put timely and appropriate interventions in place. You will build strong, positive relationships—particularly with students most at risk—helping to improve behaviour, engagement, and personal development. Using restorative and supportive approaches, you’ll guide students to understand their behaviour and make positive changes, contributing to a college environment where every learner feels valued and included.
What you’ll be doing:
- Building trusted relationships with students to promote engagement, confidence, and positive behaviour
- Supporting students with their personal development, resilience, and self‑esteem
- Monitoring attendance, punctuality, and progress of at‑risk students and taking appropriate action
- Working closely with teaching staff, Learning Managers, and families to ensure consistent support
- Responding to behavioural or wellbeing concerns and escalating safeguarding issues where required
- Maintaining accurate records to support interventions and reporting
- Delivering restorative conversations and supporting behaviour plans
- Acting as a key liaison between students, staff, and external agencies
- Signposting students to appropriate internal support services
- Promoting a consistent, inclusive, and positive learning environment across Level 1 provision
What we’re looking for:
We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and proactive individual with a genuine commitment to supporting young people.
Essential:
- GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above)
- Level 2 qualification in a relevant field (or willingness to work towards)
- Experience supporting young people, particularly those with social, emotional, or mental health needs
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding principles and practices
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism
- Strong organisational and record‑keeping skills
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively to changing needs
- Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and safeguarding
Desirable:
- Level 3 qualification in Safeguarding, Youth Work, Health & Social Care, or similar
- Experience in an educational setting
- Mental Health First Aid or trauma‑informed training
- Knowledge of multi‑agency working and referral pathways
- Experience with restorative practices and behaviour support strategies
- Familiarity with student/safeguarding systems (e.g. ProMonitor, ProSolution)
