This hybrid role combines customer-facing field service support (approximately 60%) with hands-on quality support activities (approximately 40%), primarily focused on Incoming Quality Control (IQC) and Final Inspection & Quality Assurance (FIQA). The role involves regular customer interaction and travel to customer sites across the UK and Europe. It plays a key part in maintaining high system uptime, improving product reliability, and ensuring traceable quality standards across ONI products. The position works cross-functionally with Service, Quality, Product Lifecycle Engineering, and Manufacturing teams to resolve technical issues, prevent recurrence of failures, and support continuous improvement of hardware performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Field Service (approximately 60%)
  • Perform on-site and remote troubleshooting, repairs, and scheduled maintenance of ONI hardware systems to maximise system uptime.
  • Act as a primary technical point of contact for customers, providing clear and professional support.
  • Diagnose hardware issues using structured root-cause analysis and escape recurring or systemic issues as appropriate.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate service reports, repair documentation, and service history records within internal systems.
  • Support Field Service Engineers and Operations to reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).
  • Gather and relay customer feedback related to system performance, usability, and feature requests to Engineering and Quality teams.
  • Quality Support (approximately 40%)
    • Provide hands-on support for IQC activities, including inspection, testing, and documentation of hardware components and assemblies.
    • Perform FIQA activities, including final verification and release approval prior to shipment to customers.
    • Work with Quality and Engineering teams to investigate non-conformances and recurring failure modes.
    • Ensure inspections and investigations follow approved procedures and work instructions.
    • Maintain accurate and traceable quality records to support audits and compliance requirements.
    • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to improve first-time-pass yield, reduce rework, and prevent recurrence of issues.
    Requirements
    • Experience handling optical, laser-based, imaging, or electromechanical hardware systems.
    • Experience working with PCBs and electronic assemblies.
    • Strong troubleshooting ability and structured root-cause analysis skills.
    • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with internal teams and customers.
    • High attention to detail and disciplined approach to documentation and traceability.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Hands-on experience supporting quality processes such as IQC or final inspection in a manufacturing or service environment.
    Desirable
    • Experience working with biomedical, life-science, or microscopy instrumentation.
    • Experience performing quality inspections on optical or electromechanical components.
    • Experience analysing service or quality data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
    • Experience working as a Service Support or Field Service Engineer in a scientific or instrumentation environment.
