Oneworld Publications publishes 12–15 new fiction titles each year across our acclaimed literary fiction list and our Magpie list. Our authors include winners of the Booker Prize, the Women’s Prize for Fiction, and the Diverse Book Award, with titles regularly shortlisted for major UK literary prizes.
We are seeking an Assistant Editor to join our fiction team, working across both lists. This role is ideal for someone with at least one year’s paid editorial experience at a UK trade publisher, who is looking to deepen their editorial skills in a dynamic, independent publishing environment.
The role
Reporting to the Fiction Publisher, you will support editors across the full publishing process, from submission to finished book. Responsibilities include:
- Reviewing manuscript submissions and preparing reader reports
- Monitoring schedules and deadlines with the production team
- Writing draft cover briefs and researching competing titles
- Drafting marketing and promotional copy
- Performing pre-print checks and proofreading
- Soliciting endorsements
- Liaising with authors and agents
- Maintaining the title database
- Collaborating across editorial, design, production, sales, marketing and publicity
About you
You will have:
- First-class knowledge of language and grammar
- Excellent attention to detail
- A strong interest in literary fiction
- At least one year’s experience in an editorial role within trade publishing
