About the team

Our payments platforms are critical to that mission - enabling secure, resilient and innovative customer journeys in a highly regulated environment. We're looking for a Principal Engineer (Payments) to play a pivotal leadership role across our payments and core banking technology landscape. This role combines deep technical expertise with strong people and delivery leadership, shaping how we design, build and run payment solutions across the Group. Working closely with senior technology and value stream leaders, and reporting to the Group Head of Technical Delivery, you'll help define strategy while actively driving end-to-end delivery to ensure our platforms are secure, scalable and future‑ready. The role can be based from our Wolverhampton, Chatham or London office and will require occasional travel between all OSB Group locations.

What you will be doing

As a Principal Engineer you'll provide hands‑on technical leadership across engineering teams delivering and operating our payments platforms, including Faster Payments, BACS, CHAPS, cards, Open Banking and mobile wallets.

Responsibilities

  • Setting and executing the engineering strategy for the payments domain, aligned to OSB Group’s technology and business objectives
  • Leading the design, build and operation of modern payments platforms, ensuring regulatory compliance, performance and resilience
  • Owning end‑to‑end technical delivery, including architecture, development, testing, deployment, change governance and live operations
  • Providing hands‑on technical leadership across full‑stack engineering teams, with a strong focus on quality, automation and cloud‑first design
  • Overseeing integrations with UK payment schemes and core banking platforms, including Mambu
  • Partnering with product, architecture and business stakeholders to translate customer and regulatory needs into robust technical solutions
  • Managing supplier and partner relationships to ensure delivery meets OSB standards

Experience and qualifications

  • Significant experience in a senior technical leadership role within banking or financial services
  • Deep expertise in the payments domain, including real‑time payments, cards, BACS, CHAPS, Open Banking and APIs
  • Proven experience designing, scaling and operating secure, high‑performance payments platforms
  • Strong background in core banking systems, cloud‑native architectures, microservices and DevOps practices
  • Solid understanding of regulatory, risk and compliance requirements (e.g. PSD2, PCI DSS, GDPR)
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP) and modern data platforms
