We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Groundworks Project Manager to join our team in Exeter on a freelance (contract) or permanent basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive leader who thrives in a fast-paced site environment and can hit the ground running immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Take full charge of on-site operations for groundworks projects.
  • Manage and coordinate up to 12 machines (excavators, dumpers, etc.) and associated plant/equipment.
  • Oversee all associated groundworks activities, including drainage installation and systems; slabbing, paving, and external surfacing; shuttering, formwork, and concrete works; excavation, foundations, sub-structures, and related tasks.
  • Lead and supervise site teams, subcontractors, and operatives to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery.
  • Monitor progress against programme, manage daily resources, and resolve on-site issues promptly.
  • Ensure full compliance with health & safety regulations, site-specific risk assessments, and company procedures.
  • Liaise with clients, engineers, and other stakeholders to maintain strong communication and project alignment.
  • Control costs, materials, and labour to keep projects on budget and on schedule.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Project Manager (or Site Manager/Supervisor) in groundworks, civils, or heavy construction projects.
  • Strong practical knowledge of groundworks disciplines: drainage, slabs/paving, shuttering, foundations, and machine management.
  • Experience managing multiple machines and large site teams.
  • Excellent organisational and leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams.
  • Sound understanding of CDM regulations, health & safety best practices, and site management.
  • Full UK driving licence (preferred).
  • CSCS card (Black or Gold) and relevant certifications (SMSTS, First Aid, etc.) advantageous.
  • Immediate availability preferred - start ASAP.
