Overview
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Groundworks Project Manager to join our team in Exeter on a freelance (contract) or permanent basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive leader who thrives in a fast-paced site environment and can hit the ground running immediately.
Responsibilities
- Take full charge of on-site operations for groundworks projects
- Manage and coordinate up to 12 machines (excavators, dumpers, etc.) and associated plant/equipment
- Oversee all associated groundworks activities, including:
- Drainage installation and systems
- Slabbing, paving, and external surfacing
- Shuttering, formwork, and concrete works
- Excavation, foundations, sub-structures, and related tasks
- Lead and supervise site teams, subcontractors, and operatives to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery
- Monitor progress against programme, manage daily resources, and resolve any on-site issues promptly
- Ensure full compliance with health & safety regulations, site-specific risk assessments, and company procedures
- Liaise with clients, engineers, and other stakeholders to maintain strong communication and project alignment
- Control costs, materials, and labour to keep projects on budget and on schedule
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Project Manager (or Site Manager/Supervisor) in groundworks, civils, or heavy construction projects
- Strong practical knowledge of groundworks disciplines: drainage, slabs/paving, shuttering, foundations, and machine management
- Experience managing multiple machines and large site teams
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams
- Sound understanding of CDM regulations, health & safety best practices, and site management
- Full UK driving licence (preferred)
- CSCS card (Black or Gold) and relevant certifications (SMSTS, First Aid, etc.) advantageous
