Hertfordshire’s Family Centre Service is made up of the Public Health Nursing Service (Health Visitors and School Nurses) and the Family Support Service. Our purpose is to support children and families to have the best start in life, develop well and thrive. We provide families with children aged up to 5 years with a wide range of services, information and support on key areas relating to family life.

As a Perinatal Practitioner, you will promote the engagement of all parents and families, primarily antenatally and postnatally, in the services and support available to them, both face‑to‑face and digitally, through the Family Support Service and other agencies, with a particular focus on the more vulnerable families in the community. You will engage with all parents and carers, including soon‑to‑be and young parents, while gaining a solid awareness of the local community's demographics and the networks, services, facilities, and support systems available to families in the area.

The Role

  • Participate in preparing and delivering a range of antenatal and postnatal specialist programmes for first‑time parents and those identified as a priority. Delivery will be through various methods, including group meetings, one‑to‑ones, digital platforms, and social media.
  • You will provide a range of services, information, advice, specialist support, and interventions that support aspects such as infant feeding, safe sleep, self‑weigh appointments, reducing isolation, and baby massage.
  • Hold a caseload of vulnerable families, working within the defined support interventions, planning creative responses to families’ needs and delivering support sessions and activities within the home and community, using various evidence‑based parenting models and programmes, individually and in groups.
  • Keeping accurate records is essential for a good level of computer literacy.
  • Partnership working.
  • Occasional evening, Saturday, and lone working may be required within the centre’s opening hours.

Requirements

  • At least a Level 3 in a recognised professional qualification in health, education, childcare, social care or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the importance of Child Protection Procedures and Safeguarding children.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience of working with families from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • You will need a valid UK driving licence, access to a car during working hours, business‑use insurance, and a willingness to travel regularly.

Important: We do not provide visa sponsorship; you must be eligible to work in the UK. You must reside in the UK for the duration of your employment and provide Right to Work evidence.

As some of our roles involve working with vulnerable members of society, this position may require a Basic or Enhanced Criminal Disclosure, which will be conducted once a conditional offer is made.
