As a Street Works Inspector, you will inspect live street works and completed reinstatements across Somerset to ensure compliance with NRSWA, permit conditions, the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH), and the Safety at Street Works & Road Works Code of Practice. You will record inspection outcomes using electronic devices and be comfortable working largely unsupervised while travelling across the county, covering a large number of sites daily. You must ideally be Street Works Supervisor qualified and have good geographic knowledge of Somerset along with good navigation skills. You must be confident dealing with live on-site situations and comfortable engaging directly with statutory undertakers and members of the public.

Your role will include:

  • Meeting with statutory undertakers to discuss compliance, performance and upcoming works, while inspecting live work sites and completed reinstatements to ensure they meet required standards.
  • Identifying defective works, issuing instructions for remedial action, and following up to ensure compliance.
  • Recording inspections using handheld devices and systems such as Confirm and Street Manager, including accurate mapping and photo evidence.
  • Checking diversion routes and temporary traffic management to ensure signage and alternative routes are compliant.
  • Carrying out post-closure inspections to identify damage caused by diverted traffic and directing undertakers to remedy issues.
  • Supporting coordinators and statutory undertakers by providing site-based advice, local knowledge and practical insight.
  • Engaging professionally with the public and partners, addressing complaints, enquiries and site issues.
  • Providing evidence for enforcement processes, including overrunning works (s.74) and non-compliance inspections.
