The Opportunity

As an HGV Technician, you'll play a vital role in maintaining, servicing and repairing a wide range of heavy goods vehicles.

Working with modern diagnostic equipment and industry-leading tools, you'll carry out everything from routine servicing and inspections to complex fault finding and major repairs, ensuring vehicles remain safe, compliant and roadworthy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed vehicle inspections to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using diagnostic equipment.
  • Assess issues related to engines, transmissions, brake systems, and other critical components of HGVs.
  • Conduct repairs on various vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, and suspension.
  • Carry out routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire checks and replacements, and fluid top-ups.
  • Implement preventative maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and enhance vehicle reliability.
  • Monitor and record vehicle performance to anticipate potential problems and schedule timely interventions.
  • Communicate effectively with the Workshop Controller and the services team to explain repairs and maintenance needs.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in HGV technology and repair techniques.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs to maintain technical skills.
  • Provide detailed cost estimates and timelines for repairs and services.
  • Ensure that all repairs and maintenance work complies with safety regulations and company standards.
  • Perform post-repair inspections and test drives to confirm the effectiveness of repairs.
  • Maintain accurate service records, including work performed, parts used, and labor hours.
  • Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for logging and tracking repair and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure Health & Safety regulations and safe working practices are adhered to
  • Provide cover on rota system for breakdown cover
  • We're looking for candidates with experience in one or more of the following
  • HGV or LGV maintenance and repair.
  • Military vehicle engineering (including ex-Forces personnel).
  • Plant, agricultural, hydraulic or heavy mechanical equipment maintenance.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding abilities across mechanical and electrical systems.
  • You will also have
  • City and Guilds level 3 or NVQ qualified technician
  • Current driving licence
  • Proficient in the use of diagnostic tools and repair equipment specific to HGVs.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical repair skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Awareness and understanding of health and safety requirements
  • Computer literate
  • HGV licence (desired but not essential)
  • Fork Lift Licence (FLT) (desired but not essential)
  • Ability to lift heavy components and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Capability to work in various conditions, including outdoor environments and in confined spaces.
