One Hatfield Hospital, part of Phoenix Hospital Group, is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Ward Senior Staff Nurse to join our friendly and dynamic Ward team. Reporting to the Ward Manager, the successful candidate will play a key role in delivering the highest standard of individualized patient care, ensuring the comfort and safety of patients during their visit/admission to the hospital. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, the role supports the Ward Manager and Ward Sisters, contributing to clinical excellence while maintaining full compliance with hospital policies, national guidelines and best practice standards.
Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Please note: this role does require on‑call rota duties.
Main Roles & Responsibilities:
- Supporting the Ward Manager and the Ward Sisters with senior responsibilities.
- Provide pre‑ and post‑operation care, assessing patient needs, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care.
- Identify patient care requirements by establishing rapport, providing emotional and psychological support to the patient and their family/carer.
- Provide healthcare advice, educating patients/families on conditions, medications, self‑care and health maintenance, answering questions.
- Carry out clinical nursing procedures, including administering medication, injections, intravenous infusions, and male and female catheterisation.
- Record and maintain accurate patient medical records and histories on the relevant care pathways, clinical forms and IT systems.
- Create customised care plans through collaboration with other departments.
- Effective and safe discharge planning to various locations.
- Participate in audit processes for monitoring nursing quality.
- Assist with establishing and monitoring care pathways, measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards, recommending necessary adjustments.
- Report incidents and complaints via the Sentinel reporting module and raise appropriately to senior staff if unresolved.
- Accurate monitoring and recording of Early Warning Scores and escalation as per policy.
- Maintain and practice comprehensive handover of patients between shifts, departments and multidisciplinary teams including external agencies.
Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse with NMC.
Experience:
- Clinical nursing experience in elective surgical care.
- Proven ability to work independently and within a team.
Skills:
- Demonstrable knowledge and competency in required clinical practice.
- Phlebotomy, cannulation, ECGs, and intravenous antibiotics are advantageous.
- Comprehensive written, numerical and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with MS Office Suite and web‑based reporting systems.
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet changing business needs.
- Customer service skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of safeguarding principles.
