Role Summary

We are seeking an ambitious and pro-active apprentice with a passion for electro-mechanical engineering to join and strengthen our Site and Systems Teams. This role offers the opportunity to complete a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Electro-Mechanical Engineering while contributing directly to the installation, maintenance, and development of our systems.

Over the course of the programme, you will be expected to take ownership of both your practical and academic development, working towards successful completion of a BEng (Hons) qualification and Degree Apprenticeship Certificate, evidenced through a final end-point assessment and portfolio of work.

The five year standard will combine block-release study at the University of Nottingham with structured self-directed study. Alongside this, you will play an active role in delivering high-tech projects, primarily involving the installation and integration of systems on trains at depots across the UK, as well as supporting system build, development, and testing activities at our Derby production facility.

The role involves regular travel to customer sites nationwide and requires the ability to balance operational responsibilities with the demands of degree-level study. A proactive approach to learning, strong problem-solving capability, and the discipline to manage independent study are essential.

You will gain hands-on experience working with a range of advanced technologies, including machine vision systems, precision lighting, laser measurement, thermal sensing, embedded Linux platforms, IP networking, and GPS/4G/5G connectivity. This exposure will enable you to develop a strong foundation in system integration, fault-finding, and engineering in real-world environments.

This is a dynamic and demanding role, offering the opportunity to apply academic learning directly to practical engineering challenges. You will also gain broader business exposure through collaboration with teams such as Business Development.

The programme requires strong analytical and mathematical ability, alongside a high level of commitment and self-motivation. You will be supported by experienced engineers, with the Lead Site Engineer ensuring a varied workload that reinforces and complements your academic learning. This is an exceptional opportunity for the right candidate to build a long-term career in electro-mechanical engineering.

Responsibilities

This is a hands-on role with varied responsibilities, working hours, and locations depending on the specific project requirements. While based from our Derby office, the role is primarily site-based, there will be a need to travel to our head office in Bristol several times per year. Travel and accommodation for these visits will be arranged and costs covered by the company.
