About the Role
To design and deliver a highly adapted, cross‑curricular timetable spanning both core academic subjects and vocational courses. The post‑holder will manage a flexible teaching load, leading classroom teams to implement specific EHCP interventions while tracking the unique learning pathways of complex SEND pupils.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach a highly flexible, multi‑subject timetable across both core subjects (English, Maths, Science, PSHE) and creative vocational courses (Music, PE and Business).
- Ensure that all instructional materials are differentiated according to the different abilities of the class.
- Direct and lead classroom learning support assistant and broader support staff, ensuring they are deployed effectively to implement targeted Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) strategies.
- Partner with speech and language therapists and engagement and personal development lead to integrate clinical recommendations into daily multi‑subject lessons.
- Maintain a structured, communication‑rich and safe classroom environment that minimises anxiety and supports sensory regulation.
- Analyse daily, weekly and termly attendance data to identify patterns of persistent absence or school refusal across specific demographics.
- Present attendance data reports, trends analyses and impact measurements regularly to the Head of School.
- Use data to spot early indicators of school avoidance, triggering rapid welfare or safeguarding interventions before patterns embed.
- Design bespoke, highly supportive “Return to School” plans for pupils struggling with sensory overload, mental health crises or extreme anxiety.
- Coordinate and conduct targeted home visits to verify unexplained absences, assess pupil welfare in the home environment, and deliver practical support to families in crisis.
- Distinguish between unavoidable medical absences and disengagement, working with the School Healthcare Assistant to safely maximise school hours for medically complex pupils.
- Implement a robust whole‑school strategy for family partnership, providing families with emotional support, advocacy and guidance on SEND rights.
- Establish early intervention frameworks by initiating and leading Early Help Assessments and Team Around the Family (TAF) meetings to support families before attendance or safety deteriorates.
Person Specification Criteria
Qualification and Training- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Evidence of continuous professional training in specialised SEND teaching methods.
- Training in specific alternative communication platforms like PECS or Makaton.
- Successful experience teaching young people with complex educational needs.
- Proven experience planning and delivering across multiple subject areas or leading a primary‑model/cross‑curricular classroom.
- Track record of directing and collaborating effectively with Learning Support.
- Specific experience delivering foundation vocational courses.
- Deep understanding of adaptive teaching strategies and neurodiversity‑friendly pedagogy.
- Clear knowledge of statutory EHCP mechanisms and how to embed individual pupil targets into wider group lessons.
- Thorough understanding of specialised tracking frameworks meant for small‑step progress measurement.
- Knowledge of trauma‑informed education or Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) frameworks.
- High levels of professional flexibility and adaptability to move confidently between teaching core academics and practical vocational subjects.
- Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively deploy and upskill classroom support staff.
- Ability to create multi‑subject, visual and highly interactive content.
- Advanced data literacy to translate non‑linear pupil data into accessible learning steps.
