Key Responsibilities
- Careers Strategy and Statutory Compliance: Adapt and deliver national careers standards to make them entirely meaningful and accessible for SEND learners. Provide highly accessible, visual and personalised careers advice directly to students, ensuring their voices and aspirations drive their future planning. Keep updated with statutory requirements regarding post‑16 and post‑19 pathways for students with complex educational needs.
- Progress Tracking and Independent Living (PIA): Lead the implementation of Personalised Independence Assessments (PIA), precisely measuring and recording small‑step progress in life skills, communication and self‑regulation. Coordinate, evaluate and oversee practical, real‑world instruction programmes like independent travel training, financial literacy and general community safety. Ensure data collected from PIAs is used effectively.
- Transition Planning: Work collaboratively to map and link every student’s individual career goals directly to the Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) legal outcomes detailed in their EHCPs. Proactively source, secure and risk‑assess external supported work experience placements and voluntary opportunities. Act as the first point of contact for specialist colleges, training providers and local authority transitions teams.
- Parent Guidance and Post‑School Destination Tracking: Build strong partnerships with families; proactively guide and help parents navigate the complex systems of post‑school benefits, adult social care and independent living options. Monitor, record and report on student destinations and long‑term outcomes after they formally leave the provision, using this data to refine the careers curriculum.
- Reporting and Operational Leadership: Report directly to the Head of Teaching regarding the performance of the careers curriculum, student progress data and destination trends. Lead staff training for tutors and teaching assistants to ensure independence tracking and PfA targets are embedded into daily classroom routines.

Proven track record of evaluating and tracking student data (academic or non‑academic). Experience sourcing and risk‑assessing external work placements for vulnerable individuals. Experience working closely with social care and external adult service providers.
- Knowledge and Understanding: Deep understanding of the Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) outcomes and the SEND Code of Practice. Thorough knowledge of how to adapt national career guidance frameworks for SEND learners. Clear understanding of the unique financial and social care systems parents encounter post‑education. Knowledge of specialised frameworks used to assess non‑linear, small‑step life skills progress.
- Skills and Abilities: Advanced organisational and networking skills to build strong partnerships with local employers and colleges. Ability to create highly accessible, multi‑modal, and visual learning resources for diverse cognitive abilities. Excellent communication skills to empathetically support and empower parents through transitional periods. Ability to present clear, visual data tracking reports regarding student destinations and PIA milestones to senior leaders.
- Personal Attributes: Relentlessly student‑centred with a passionate belief in maximising independence and employability for all young adults.
