About the Role: To lead, develop and quality‑assure the delivery of an innovative, highly adapted and therapeutic curriculum. The post‑holder will ensure that teaching methods accommodate Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), driving exceptional, personalised student progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership of the Curriculum: Collaborate with the Head of School to establish a clear, ambitious vision for teaching and learning across the provision. Design and oversee a highly differentiated, flexible and multi‑pathway curriculum that caters to different abilities and learning needs. Ensure that the curriculum explicitly embeds the Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) frameworks and statutory Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets.
- Quality Assurance and Monitoring: Lead a robust quality assurance framework, including regular lesson observations, supportive learning walks and work/portfolio scrutiny. Analyse academic and non‑academic data to identify gaps in teaching quality or student engagement, and implement rapid support plans where needed. Ensure all classroom practices are strictly compliant with Ofsted frameworks and statutory SEND regulations.
- Coaching, Mentoring and Staff Development (CPD): Establish a culture of collaborative coaching and peer mentoring to elevate teaching standards across all classrooms. Design and deliver a comprehensive, evidence‑based Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program focused on specialised SEND pedagogy. Line‑managing and appraising teaching staff and setting rigorous but achievable performance management targets.
- Therapeutic and Environmental Integration: Partner closely with the therapy team (SALT and Occupational Therapy) to embed sensory diets and communication systems into daily lessons. Oversee classroom environments to ensure they are low‑arousal, highly structured, communication‑rich and physically accessible for all learners.
- Operational Management and Collaboration: Deputise for the Head of School in their absence on matters relating to the daily educational provision. Work collaboratively with the Assessment and Intervention Lead and Engagement and Personal Development Lead to ensure holistic student support. Report regularly to the Head of School on the quality of education, teacher performance and curriculum impact.
Person Specification
- Qualification and Training: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent. Degree or equivalent higher education qualification. Evidence of continuous professional development in SEND leadership. National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO). National Professional Qualification (NPQLTD, NPQSL).
- Experience: Experience of teaching within a SEND setting or specialised unit. Proven track record of successfully leading a subject or staff team. Experience in adapting mainstream curricula for complex needs (ASD, SLD, PMLD, SEMH). Experience managing budgets or resource allocation. Experience leading a school through a successful Ofsted inspection.
- Knowledge and Understanding: Deep knowledge of specialised SEND pedagogies, scaffolding techniques, and adaptive teaching. Strong understanding of the current Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF) and SEND Code of Practice. Clear knowledge of tracking non‑linear, small‑step progress. Knowledge of trauma‑informed practice and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) frameworks.
- Skills and Abilities: Exceptional coaching and mentoring skills with the ability to upskill teachers and support staff. Ability to analyse complex progress data and translate it into practical classroom interventions. Excellent communication skills to build trust with staff, parents, and external therapists. Proficiency in using school information management systems.
