Role purpose
The Principal Design Engineer will be responsible for managing and leading projects. A thorough understanding of managing project delivery to quality, cost and programme deliverables. Manage and deliver single- and/or multi-disciplinary projects to cost, schedule and quality criteria. Lead aspects of infrastructure design, work as lead designer on a range of project sizes, appropriate to their experience. The Principal Design Engineer is a key member of the Design Management team. You will assist the Design Manager to ensure technical compliance, quality, and successful delivery of a portfolio of design projects. Generating Primary designs and working with other Omexom Engineers in converting these designs into working drawings as part of a wider design team. Have significant knowledge and experience of legislation required in this industry and implement it as required. Works to own initiative and will be required to supervise design and graduate engineers and trainees. The principal design engineer will provide appropriate levels of Primary design to a range of different Primary elements as required by the BUGM and their reports. Possesses an advanced level of skill and understanding and is able to perform all parts of the task satisfactorily and make judgements and decisions correctly in a variety of situations. Can check work at the highest level. To be responsible for input into IET/IMechE training scheme as required and to support graduates. Will contribute to the development and mentoring a range of staff grads ranging from graduates through to principal designers.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Day to day management of a design team
- Undertake checking of design deliverables.
- The review and cascading of current industry standards.
- The Safety, Health and Environmental awareness of all design staff.
- The quality of ALL design submissions.
- Discharging the responsibilities of the Designer under the 2015 CDM regulations including the principles of prevention.
- The promotion and enforcement of company procedures to design staff.
- The review of method statements/risk assessments.
- The development and implementation of new industry software where applicable.
- Ensure design deliverables are met and to report on performance to the Head of design or their associates.
- Promote safe by design principles, consider sustainability and low carbon options.
- Responsible and to lead detailed design and calculations in accordance with the relevant standards and procedures, under the direction of the head of design or their associates.
- May assume the role of Lead Design Engineer on large or complex projects as well as smaller projects as required.
- Assist the Design Manager with appointing and provide training where necessary and manage design staff in an efficient manner.
- Business development with DNOs and TSOs, including prospecting, tendering and delivering design services.
- Assist with the production of design tools and production and review of internal procedures.
- Excellent level of understanding of relevant British Standards and Eurocodes with regard to Primary, design and specification.
- Work closely with other members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians from other disciplines, including external consultants where necessary.
- Coordinate with site construction teams, principal designers (2015 CDM) and temporary works coordinators and support constructability reviews.
- Support tender and tender preparation for projects of all varying sizes including fee estimates.
- Provide support to CAD staff and trainees in their professional development.
- Ensure thorough checking and accuracy of deliverables.
- Manage and keep records in accordance with company QA procedures.
- Have responsibility for maintaining calculation and drawing records.
- Participate in lessons Learnt and knowledge share workshops and share across the organisation and design team.
- Attend in-house design courses and seminars and feedback to the rest of the department if required.
- Keep up to date with IET /IMechE CPD requirements.

Person Specification
Qualifications and experience
The jobholder shall hold a degree in Electrical Engineering, or a holder of degrees suitable to be either an Engineering Council (EngC) Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng) or Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) with one of the relevant Professional Engineering Institutions (PEI’s) such as Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Engineering and Technology, Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Essential:
- Mandatory Omexom training courses.
- Must have a detailed understanding of the latest OHL design practices, standards and analysis software systems.
- Preferable BSc/BEng in Electrical Engineering with 7-10 Years OHL design and construction industry experience.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- 6-10 years experience on significant value schemes as a designer.
- Principal Designer experience.
Desirable:
- Principal Design Engineer to be minimum Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng with the IMechE or IET), but the preference for a Principal engineer would be fully chartered. (C.Eng).
- Attend National Grid Persons Course.
- CSCS card as Academically qualified person (AQP) / Safety Passport or equivalent.
Competencies
Required skills, knowledge, and abilities:
- Working knowledge and experience of the 2015 CDM Regulations including Principal Designer requirements and namely Regulations 8 and 9.
- Discharge the responsibilities of Designer under the 2015 CDM Regulations, and ensure a comprehensive Designers Risk Assessment undertaken for all Projects.
- Promote and enforcement of company procedures to Design staff.
- Knowledge of current UK technical standards and legislation requirements.
- Knowledge and understanding of typical construction materials used in the UK such as timber, concrete, reinforced concrete and its limitations.
- An eye for detail when undertaking specific tasks, and the effect of their use/implementation to the wider project.
- High level of proficiency of Microsoft office software.
- To engage and use various design software programs such as AutoCAD, Revit. To have an excellent level of understanding.
- A good working understanding of document control processes and be familiar with ISO 19650 for BIM.
- High Level proficiency in the use of AutoCad 2D and 3D.
