The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for managing and leading projects with a thorough understanding of managing project delivery to quality, cost and programme deliverables. They will manage and deliver single- and/or multi-disciplinary projects to cost, schedule and quality criteria, leading aspects of infrastructure design work as lead designer on a range of project sizes, appropriate to their experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Generating Primary designs and working with other Omexom Engineers in converting these designs into working drawings as part of a wider design team.
- Having knowledge and experience of legislation required in this industry and implementing it as required.
- Supervising design and graduate engineers and trainees.
- Providing appropriate levels of Primary design to a range of different Primary elements as required by the BUGM and their reports.
- Contributing to the development and mentoring of junior staff.
Responsibilities & Duties include:
- Day to day management of a design team.
- Ensuring design deliverables are met and reporting on performance to principle engineers or their associates.
- Promoting safe by design and considering sustainability and low carbon options.
- Leading detailed design and calculations in accordance with the relevant standards and procedures, under the direction of a principle designer or their associates.
- Maintaining a good level of understanding of relevant British Standards and Eurocodes with regard to Primary design and specification.
- Working closely with other members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
- Collaborating with engineers and technicians from other disciplines, including external consultants where necessary.
- Coordinating with site construction teams, principal designers (2015 CDM) and temporary works coordinators and supporting constructability reviews.
- Supporting tender and tender preparation for projects of all varying sizes including fee estimates.
- Providing support to CAD staff and trainees in their professional development.
- Ensuring thorough checking and accuracy of deliverables.
- Managing and keeping records in accordance with company QA procedures.
- Participating in lessons learnt and knowledge share workshops and sharing across the organisation and design team.
- Attending in-house design courses and seminars and providing feedback to the rest of the department if required.
- Keeping up to date with IET / IMechE CPD requirements.
- Reporting to management team as required.
- Representing Omexom – Design in external project technical meetings and events if required.
- Developing positive relationships with customers through good professional conduct.
- Reviewing specialist subcontractors/suppliers production calculations and drawings for technical compliance with design intent.
- Managing multiple tasks effectively and accurately under pressure and strict deadlines.
- Exhibiting excellent time and cost management skills to ensure cost effective and accurate delivery.
- Demonstrating good communication style and interpersonal skills.
Person Specification:
The jobholder shall hold a degree in Electrical Engineering, or a holder of degrees suitable to be either an Engineering Council (EngC) Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng) or Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) with one of the relevant Professional Engineering Institutions (PEI’s) such as Institution of Engineering and Technology, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and possess:
- BSc/BEng in Electrical Engineering with 4–7 years design and construction industry experience.
- Mandatory Omexom training courses.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Working towards Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng) or Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) with either the IET or IMechE.
- Attending National Grid Persons Course.
- Having suitable site experience in a supervisory role, which should include foundation setting out/construction, structure assembly/erection, conductor erection and temporary works.
- CSCS card as Academically Qualified Person (AQP) / Safety Passport or equivalent.
Competencies Required:
- Knowledge and experience of the 2015 CDM Regulations including Principal Designer requirements.
- Knowledge of current UK technical standards and legislation requirements.
- Understanding of typical construction materials used in the UK.
- High level of proficiency of Microsoft Office software.
- Engagement with various design software programs such as AutoCAD, Revit.
- Proven track record of project delivery and client satisfaction.
- Good communication skills and awareness of own limits.
