Job Title: Senior Design Engineer – Substation (Civil)
Location: Glasgow (Hamilton)
Reporting to: Section Lead – Substation Civil
Business Unit: Omexom Design
Purpose of the Position
To deliver high-quality civil engineering design for transmission and distribution substations as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The role involves supporting the development of designs from concept to construction, ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and client requirements.
Responsibilities
- Design Development
Prepare civil and structural design calculations, drawings, and specifications for substation projects, including foundations, steelwork, access roads, drainage, and bunds. - Project Delivery
Contribute to the development of design packages at feasibility, detailed design, and construction stages. Ensure outputs meet technical, quality, safety, and programme requirements. - Technical Compliance
Ensure designs are delivered in accordance with relevant client specifications and applicable standards (BS EN, Eurocodes, CDM 2015). - Design Coordination
Liaise with internal teams (e.g. electrical, structural, geotechnical), external consultants, and subcontractors to ensure coordinated and buildable solutions. - Site Support
Assist with site surveys, inspections, and construction queries as required. Provide technical input during construction and commissioning stages. - Documentation & Assurance
Support the preparation of design risk assessments, technical queries (TQs), and responses to Requests for Information (RFIs). Maintain design registers and contribute to project reporting. - Digital Delivery
Use appropriate engineering and design software (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, STAAD.Pro, TEDDS) and contribute to collaborative model development where applicable. - Continuous Improvement
Participate in design reviews and lessons-learned sessions. Contribute to the development and improvement of internal standards and design processes.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience working on civil design for substations or similar infrastructure (e.g. energy, utilities, industrial).
- Knowledge of substation-specific civil works such as transformer bunds, earth switch structures, GRP fencing, foundations, and access roads.
- Familiarity with UK regulatory and design standards including CDM 2015, Eurocodes, Building Regulations, and NGET specifications.
- Ability to produce and review civil design calculations, reports, and drawings.
- Proficient in the use of civil design tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or equivalent).
Desirable Attributes
- Working towards professional accreditation (e.g. CEng, IEng, ICE).
- Familiarity with BIM Level 2 workflows and ISO 19650 standards.
- Knowledge of drainage and flood risk assessments (e.g. using MicroDrainage or Causeway Flow).
- Experience supporting design delivery under NEC3/4 contracts.
