This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical engineering work, solving complex problems on the shop floor, and taking ownership of automation systems day-to-day.

About the Role

You will be the primary automation and controls specialist on-site, working closely with a single Mechanical Engineer. As such, the role requires someone who is technically confident, able to work independently, and comfortable taking responsibility for automation functionality, system improvements, and troubleshooting. This is a highly practical role focusing on the development, optimisation, and reliable operation of automated production lines, filling systems, packing equipment, and robotic cells.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and support automation equipment, robotic systems, and packing/filling machinery.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, drives, servo systems, and robotics with PLCs.
  • Carry out system upgrades, modifications, and improvements to enhance performance.
  • Program, debug, and adjust PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Omron, Mitsubishi).
  • Develop and maintain HMI systems to improve operator interaction.
  • Ensure automation and electrical control systems operate safely and efficiently.
  • Provide practical, shop-floor engineering support for automated systems.
  • Work closely with the Mechanical Engineer on system improvements and mechanical/electrical integration tasks.
  • Support with hands-on adjustments, calibration, panel work, and equipment setup.
  • Monitor equipment performance and KPIs to identify improvements in throughput and efficiency.
  • Recommend and implement automation enhancements that support production targets.
  • Encourage continuous improvement across safety, quality, and operational output.
  • Assist with fault finding and corrective maintenance of automation/robotic equipment when required.
  • Support the upkeep of electrical and control systems to ensure consistent operation.
Essential Skills, Qualifications & Experience
  • Strong electrical and electromechanical knowledge, including 3-phase power, AC/DC drives, servo systems, motors, sensors, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
  • Hands-on experience working with automated machinery, robotic systems, and control equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • PLC programming experience and knowledge of industrial communication networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus).
  • ABB robot programming and integration experience.
  • Ability to interpret and create wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and control documentation.
  • Good understanding of industrial safety standards, including LOTO and safety circuits (e.g. Pilz).
  • Confident working independently and making sound engineering decisions on the shop floor.
