Java Developer – Trading / Finance (AI Tooling Focus)

Contract | Fully Remote (UK) | £450–£500 per day (Outside IR35)

We’re looking for a Senior Java Developer to join a trading/financial services team working on high-throughput, business-critical systems. This is a hands-on contract role for someone who’s comfortable improving and evolving legacy Java platforms , while also bringing modern AI-assisted development practices into the mix.

You’ll be working fully remotely from the UK, collaborating with experienced engineers and stakeholders in a fast-moving trading environment.

What you’ll be doing

• Developing and maintaining core Java services used in trading/finance
• Working confidently with legacy systems — refactoring, modernising and stabilising them
• Practising Test-Driven Development (TDD) and improving test coverage
• Using and shaping AI developer tooling to accelerate delivery and code quality
• Applying or integrating solutions using Model Context Protocol (MCP)
• Collaborating closely with engineers, product owners and domain experts
• Strong commercial experience with Java
• Solid background in TDD and automated testing
• Proven experience working on legacy codebases (not just greenfield)
• Experience in trading, finance, or other low-latency / high-reliability environments
• Hands-on experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) or similar AI context/tooling frameworks
• Comfortable working autonomously in a fully remote setup

Nice to have

• Exposure to modernisation projects (monolith to modular, performance tuning, etc.)
• Experience introducing AI tooling into established engineering teams
• Strong communication skills and pragmatic engineering mindset
