We are looking to recruit a proactive and reliable Maintenance Officer to join a well-established residential care home in Colchester. The ideal candidate will have previous maintenance experience and practical trade skills, with the ability to ensure the home, grounds, fixtures, and equipment are maintained to a high standard.

As a Maintenance Officer, you will work closely with the Home Manager to provide a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for residents, visitors, and staff. You will be responsible for carrying out repairs, decorating, grounds maintenance, and supporting health and safety compliance throughout the home.

The successful Maintenance Officer will be organised, able to work independently, and committed to maintaining high standards while always considering the wellbeing and safeguarding of vulnerable residents.

Do you have?

  • Previous experience working in a maintenance, handyman, caretaker, or similar role.
  • Practical trade skills such as carpentry, painting and decorating, building maintenance, or general repairs.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance and health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to identify maintenance issues and carry out repairs safely and effectively.
  • Experience maintaining outdoor areas, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, and general grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to build positive professional relationships.
  • A positive and proactive "can-do" attitude.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe environment for vulnerable residents.
  • Experience carrying out PAT testing (desirable – training can be provided).
  • Willingness to learn and undertake further training as required.

Key responsibilities:

  • Liaise regularly with the Home Manager to ensure the home remains safe and well maintained.
  • Carry out repairs to fixtures, fittings, and equipment where possible.
  • Identify maintenance issues and arrange external contractors when specialist work is required.
  • Complete painting and decorating tasks throughout the home.
  • Conduct grounds maintenance including grass cutting, hedge trimming, and upkeep of garden areas.
  • Support health and safety compliance by completing routine checks and inspections.
  • Undertake PAT testing and other safety-related checks following training.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are completed to a high standard.
  • Work flexibly and independently while managing workload effectively.
  • Promote safeguarding and the wellbeing of residents at all times.
