ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a committed Health, Safety and Environment Manager to support the effective delivery of College services and priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role you will:

• Lead H&S&E strategy delivery – Manage and coordinate delivery of the College's Health, Safety and Environmental priorities, policies, and improvement plans, supporting the Director of Finance & Resources in achieving strategic objectives.
• Monitor compliance and performance – Review and assess Health and Safety performance across the College, conduct audits, and recommend/implement changes needed to ensure legal compliance and best practice.
• Manage risk assessment and incident systems – Ensure risk assessments are fit for purpose (via systems like Smartlog and Evolve), analyse accident/near-miss data, and oversee critical incident and fire safety procedures.
• Provide expert advice and reporting – Advise senior leaders, managers, and Governors on H&S&E matters and legislative changes, and prepare reports (including the Annual Health and Safety Report) for governance committees.
• Build a positive safety culture – Promote a positive H&S&E culture through training, guidance, and engagement, while leading initiatives to increase awareness and compliance across the College.
• Manage external and internal relationships – Liaise with the HSE, Fire and Rescue Service, insurers, and legal advisors, while maintaining good working relationships with Trade Union H&S representatives and coordinating H&S Committee meetings.
• Lead the H&S team and environmental compliance – Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision to the Health & Safety Coordinator, and coordinate environmental compliance arrangements including sustainability and carbon reduction objectives.
• Carry out duties in line with College policies and procedures, including safeguarding and equality commitments

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

• NEBOSH General Certificate – required qualification.
• Proven H&S&E track record – demonstrated success implementing and delivering Health, Safety and Environmental improvement initiatives and operational plans.
• Compliance and legislative knowledge – strong understanding of current H.S.E. legislation and FE sector priorities, with experience raising compliance standards in an organisation.
• Leadership and people management – excellent leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and manage staff performance against targets.
• Communication and influencing skills – able to adapt communication style to build effective relationships internally and externally, including giving/receiving constructive feedback.
